Who is the guy with the coin? Pete gives him the coin in 1893, then he's there in Central Park in modern times flipping the coin again, making Pete and Abby run into each other. I assume he's an angel, or am I wrong?

I think that he's either an angel or some type of guide... Someone who paves the way for us, making sure that we are at least given the opportunity to fulfill our purposes in life. Not having read the book, that's the best explanation I can think of.
