It's a shame

I think it's a charming story, but a messy execution. This movie could have been a lot more witty. The 'twist' near the end (that he's saving the little girl) f.e. could have been a lot more exciting. The cutting in the beginning is a bit jumpy. After a slow start I bought all the fantasy and started to enjoy the dialogue. Besides from Peter Lake, Beverly and Pearly Soames I would have liked to getting to know some of the other charterers in particular better, so that the viewer is left with more of an attachment. After all the ups and many downs in the film Im still left with a smile when finished. I enjoyed it as a modern fairy tale.

I enjoyed it also, but agree with what you said. I felt no attachment to Abby at all, and I think we really should have grown a relationship there that mattered before he realized she was "the one." I also thought the entire ending was rather absurd, and left me kind of saying to myself "Well that was a beautiful... waste of time, really." I kind of just didn't get whatever point they were trying to make, but I still liked it overall.

Yes, exactly. I think so too.
A beautiful waste of time is a good way to put it. The ending was just an ending and nothing more sort of.

I enjoyed it and got the fantasy angle of the movie but am left with one question. I may have missed something but after Russell Crowe knocked Colin Farrell off the bridge Colin Farrell swam ashore. Did he keep living from 1915 to 2015 or die and come back. Really touching movie otherwise. I understand how Russell Crowe stayed alive all the time because he was the Devil's but what is the story of Colin Farrel. Good show.

It's a while since I've seen the movie, but if I remember correctly Colin lost all his memory after that event and he stayed alive til 2014. And the reason for that was because saving the girl was his destiny. Giving her life was his gift to her or something.
And I could very much be mistaken but, I think that Beverly's gift to Colin's character was not only love, but also a longer life.

reply

You're right. She gave him a long life so he could achieve his miracle. Not a good movie, but it kinda makes sense.

It's not a great movie, but I like the idea of it.
