Will this flop hurt Benedict's career ?

He's been flying high, how far will he fall ?

reply

I hope not at all. He's one of the finest actors currently out there.

Don't forget that he still has The Imitation Game -- in which he will star as Alan Turing -- coming out next year.

I'm sure Alan Turing will be a much more welcome protagonist than Julian Assange.

Depends what you mean by his career, I guess. It will certainly damage his saleability as a Hollywood leading man, I think that Amazon movie that was mooted is probably toast, the director was already talking about being concerned that he might not be able to raise the finance on Cumberbatch's name alone this will be a big stumbling block for that. I don't however think it will in any way effect him getting the kind of roles he's already had solid success in, high end TV, supporting roles in big films, British Bad Guy in US Blockbuster roles, art house films, stage etc God knows why he would want more, those things are far more interesting than most of the tripe that Hollywood vomits out but you never can account for an actors ambitions, I suppose.

I wish that they had let him LEAD more.
They focused on the Berg character far too much. The man has the charisma of a tree stump.
Benedict delivered an outstanding performance given the limitations that were placed on him.

I watched an interview with Julian Assange on youtube.com, just to see how well Cumberbatch handled the character. I AM SHOCKED! He was impeccable. His accent and mannerisms were on point. I wonder if Assange managed to hack into systems and change ticket sales, so that it lookes like a "flop".....If not, then I am :1 of roughly, 320,000 people in the world that watched this film.... some what annoyed that the prosthetic teeth creating a slight "whistling" sound when he spoke.

LOLOLOLOLOLOL!

Wouldn't that be wild...

I know Assange is good with computers, but I don't think he's that good...

I would think b.o. is easier to hack than NASA and Pentagon. Dude, he hacked into satelite in orbit when he was a kid. But I don't think he would bother with ctrivial stuff like this.

Hopefully James Grey just meant that he would add more famous actors in the supporting roles as the son, son's friend, or the writer. Not that he would replace BC as the lead. However, BC is now the top name mentioned in the new Everest film, so I'm not sure if he would want to do historical biopics of an Amazon explorer and a mountain climber so close together.

This film was bound to flop no matter who was in it, so no.

I doubt it. The movie wasn't so much a flop as it was just slow and not very interesting. They rushed to get an Assange movie out and it shows. A real flop is one that leaves you cringing at the whole thing. This just makes you yawn.

i hope not. it does seem like (nearly) every review mentions that cumberbatch himself did a good job, even if the rest of the show was mediocre.

Exactly. He always pulls off an amazing performance, even in sub-par projects. That, to me, should give more acting cred than being able to deliver an average performance in an amazing movie.

Everyone has a flop every now and then again.

Sherlock will put him back on top.

He has a total of nine films currently in some form of production, two of them being Hobbit sequels (basically a licence to print money, no matte how good they end up being), plus a third season of Sherlock on the way. If people have been thinking negatively about the guy after TFE, he'll be bouncing back soon enough.

If you think old movies are boring or modern movies suck, you haven't seen enough of either.

reply

Nope. His acting is amazing. If anything, I think it'll help his career because a lot of people haven't seen this film but they'll know he was the lead. ie: DiCaprio has had a lot of movies that were subpar, but he's acted great in pretty much all of them. They don't hurt his career.

His performance was very impressive, might mean he doesn't get a 'box-office' movie as easily but he can file this under a very good acting performance regardless of commercial performance
