Northern Soul, Steve Coogan and Antonia Thomas. This has the potential to be awesome. With Philomena Steve Coogan's star has risen as well, this could be a big success.
Omar: You giving me batty chirps, bro? You calling me a whammer?
I watched a preview of this film recently and it really is a well told fictional account of genuine experiences. The setting is not too self aware or bogged down in attempting to educate anyone about the scene or resort to knowing nods at how authentic the setting within the era is. It assumes you know certain things and is the better for it. I'm sure viewers of the film would seek out more info about the music and clubs if they didn't know.
The early trailers I've seen online look to be for a completely different movie, although some cast members have survived to the (final?) version I watched.
The music sounds incredible and the club scenes are a blast. It is so difficult to show nightclubs onscreen without sending the audience cringing into their seats. Elaine Constantine, though, has clearly experienced the utter joy found at the centre of a dancefloor, when everything in the world makes complete sense.
Despite a limited cinema release in the UK I'm glad to see that this film has grossed a considerable amount - as much as 'Gone Girl' apparently. I've bought the DVD and CD soundtrack - it is really the music that makes this film.
