Angel and D'urberville

I am intrigued by this film, but in the summary and trailer there is no mention that Tess/Trishna has two men in her life, Angel who she really loves and D'Urberville who seduces/rapes her and makes her pregnant. It says she has to choose between love and family? Just wondered if the story had changed much in this adaptation? Will hopefully get around to watching it next week, it looks like a great film either way.

They have merged the Angel/ Alec character into one person which I didn't think was particularly successful. They would have been better not to mention Tess the novel at all in relation to this film or just say 'loosely' based on it as it really deviates from the Hardy narrative.

ugh that makes me sad that they cut out Angel! I really wanted to see this movie mostly because Tess is one of my favorite books of all time.

No, I think it was done well. I always felt that Alec and Angel were actually both rather similar in their desires and downfalls, and combining them took them for the typical contrasts in the novel to a more human man. Pity about the actor's acting though

I was curious about the same thing too. I haven't seen this yet, I came on here to check it out. I saw the Tess of the d'Ubervilles mention in the synopsis and it made me excited because I liked that book well enough. But, only one dude! How can you do that and be based off Hardy's book?

For the record, I kind of hated Angel, even though he was the "good" one. The fact he dropped her like a hot potato once he found out she'd been raped was so awful. I think that's why he annoyed me. Alec was obviously skeazy/bad and admitted it, but Angel was all "I'm so pure and amazing" but was a hypocritical jerk.

So again -- not sure how this movie can only have one person lol...
