Why not return to Mumbai?

I think Trishna's agreeing to go back with him as a maid as before to one of his rural hotels, after he left her in the city to fend for herself, after they had shared a flat and lived as boyfriend-girlfriend, after he had introduced her as his girlfriend to his friends and equals, minimized her and gave him permission to treat her the way he did. She allowed him to treat her like a courtesan/maid and a sex object by choosing to return under those conditions. She had no obligation to him, they were not married...Why not go back to Mumbai, live with her girlfriends like she was doing before, and pursue a career as a music video dancer as she was starting to do? That choreographer guy who offered to buy her that card would have helped her out (in exchange for dates perhaps, but she seemed to like him too). She was apparently very good and could have made a living out of it, perhaps sending money to her family from time to time while remaining her own person and living with some dignity. I would have accepted the end, had there in fact been an 'Angel' character to warrant her running away from her loveless marriage to the Alec character and then killing the cruel Alec and herself. As it is, it makes no sense. She should have left. She should have slapped him when he first made the proposition in that outdoor cafe in Mumbai.

Trust me the choreographer was going to pimp her out. If she had. Taken the loan, she would have been forever in his debt.

You have to remember that the film is based on the novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy which the film follows fairly faithfully. So a lot of what happens in the film happened in the novel.

She comes from a rural community and a culture that does not encourage women to be strong or independent. She saw a hint of the modernized lifestyle women have in Mumbai but, her she is ultimately rooted in traditional, rural life.

When she returned home and realized that she couldn't really go back to her old life, she saw no other option but death. Trishna knew she wanted more but didn't have the concept of seeking other options or independence for herself.

As far as that guy, though it wasn't explicitly stated, I think it's clear his intentions toward her were shady. And exchanging "dates" for financial assistance or a career-lift may not be "standing on the corner"-prostitution but it is what it is.

Trishna seemed to be someone who tends to be codependent and submissive. She never really followed her dreams and just waited for Jay to do something for her/progress the relationship. I guess that lead to more resentment and frustration.
