Tengen Tetris vs. Nintendo Tetris

So, apparently these guys standardized on Nintendo's version of the game. I've always understood that real Tetris addicts shied away from it, and preferred the Tengen or Atari arcade version (which Tengen Tetris is a pretty accurate port of). What's the deal with that?

They used the Nintendo version because it was used in nwc and the difficulty doesn't level out.

In tengen's version the difficulty plateaus.

Also tengen's is not recognized as it is officially unlicensed. That would be like if street fighter tournaments were held with the rainbow accelerator hack.

in the documentary there is a scene featuring the Tengen version. One guy breaks two world records on it.

The Nintendo version is much harder than Tengen, and the majority of the best classic Tetris players prefer either NES or SNES over Tengen and Atari (SNES is really popular in mid-west tournaments, because of its head-to-head battle system).

A side note: in the Atari arcade version, you can only rotate in one direction, whereas in the Tengen version, you can rotate both ways. The DAS timings in Tengen are also slightly different. I'd argue that the Tengen version is superior than the Atari arcade version, due to those changes.

From what I understand, people who think they know what they're talking about will push the Tengen Tetris, like since it's rarer and has a 2P mode it's automatically better.

But people who really know both games still prefer the Nintendo version. It's all about understanding the controls at the highest levels, and at that point it's rather deep.
