Why Americans always call their national champions World champions

Except in the case of Baseball, we actually don't.

The reason they called it the World Series for baseball to begin with was to indicate that it was a championship between two different leagues (AL & NL).

Also, Major League Baseball has teams in the U.S. and Canada.

If you are any good at baseball, but don't live in Canada or the U.S., your goal tends to be to be good enough to sign with an MLB team and come to Canada/U.S., so for that reason why not call them the World champions? No other country's baseball team could seriously compete against a World Series winning MLB team, and the wining teams invariable have players from countries other than just the U.S. and Canada.

Football, which is just the U.S. is called the Super Bowl, and you are the League champions if you win it. No one calls it a world championship.

Basketball and Hockey both have Canadian teams, and the champions are called the league champions, and for hockey also called the Cup winners. As with baseball, if you are any good at either of these sports you want to be good enough to sign with an NBA or NHL team and come to Canada/U.S., and no other country's basketball or hockey teams could compete against a NBA/NHL championship team.

NHL has current players from 18 countries, historic players from 30 countries.

So even though we don't call those world championships, really why shouldn't we?

So those are the 4 major sports in the U.S.

If anything minor is called a World Championship, it's done primarily to make it seem more important than it actually is.

But also because maybe no other country has a contest of the sort, and because anyone from any other country is always free to come to the U.S. to compete against us openly and fairly. We welcome it.

Finally it might be called a World Championship, because it actually is. Like the 4th of July Nathan's Hot Dog eating competition, sanctioned by the IFOCE. People come from all over the world to compete in that.

Yesterday I held the Pokemon Go World Championship in my home town of Auckland, New Zealand. No one else in the world attended, although they were welcome to. So I named myself the Pokemon Go World Champion. Yay for me! 😀
