How come people are starving if you can buy food with so little money?

Hi guys, first of all, I only lived in the US when I was little, so I'm not familiar with US coupon system, like in Taiwan supermarket don't have "in-store coupon", so you can never buy so many stuffs with so little money, and the supermarket don't give you money when you're buying items, so I'm very confused about the US coupon system.
My questions are, if you use coupons like people in this show did, it seems that you can buy so many food with so little money, but how come there are still homeless people are starving? Why don't they use coupons so they can get a lot of food with just a couple of dollars? Is it because they don't know how to use/collect coupons? Or is it that this show is kind of fake, you can never buy so many food with so little money?
Also, how come the supermarkets are not in a debt if there are people using coupons like this? Is it because there are not too many people are using coupons like this? Why don't the supermarket don't change the rules about coupons so they won't be giving stuffs out for free?(Or are they changing already?)

I know this is an old post, but I thought I would add my 2 cents in.
1. Not all of the foods people want/need have coupons
2. Not all stores in all areas accept coupons
3. Unlike they show on the TV, I don't believe there are quite as many shows that double the coupons. I've heard that some of the stores that doubled coupons for this show do not normally double coupons for customers.
4. As stated by another poster, people aren't always able to get the coupons. They come in newspapers, advertisements, recycled paper centers, trash cans, etc.
5. I would say that most stores limit the number of items on which you can use a coupon. Many coupons say "Only one coupon per customer". So you can't just get a bunch of duplicates and buy a bunch of the same product.

Where I live there are no recycling centers, the local newspaper doesn't have coupons (and even if it does, it is very expensive), stores do not double coupons, sales tax is 10% (I believe it is 4 to 6% on some food items), and many stores have limits on how many items you can get with a coupon or on how many coupons you can use.

Also, prices are consistently going up and they are actually putting less food in the cans/boxes. Walmart used to sell these popcorn chicken things with dome tops and filled them to the rim. Now they have flatter tops and don't even fill them up to the top but charge 50cents more for the same product. You just can't get as much bang for your buck.

For people who are working or looking for work, they might not have time to go and look for coupons. And sometimes people go to get the items with their coupons and someone has beaten them to it.

Yeah, the 15oz cans of soup are now 13oz but they cost just the same if not more in some cases. I was lucky one day that Kroger was having a sale on the soup for 25cents a can for any 10 cans-- but its an hour away and gas is expensive. Walmart had the same soup and I showed them the ad so they had to honor it (since Kroger is apparently in their "local" price match area). I also showed the ad to several people who were in the soup aisle that day and they stocked up as well.

Hi - to answer some of your questions

1 - it is important to know that for the most part - the supermarkets are not losing money on the coupons. It is usually the product manufacturer that makes the coupon. they supermarket also gets 4 cents to "process" the coupon (including mailing the coupon to a processing centre). So if a person uses 1000 coupons, the store gets 40.00 dollars just to accept and mail the coupons back.

In the case for "coupon doubling", this is when the store absorbs the cost of the coupon.

2 - As another poster said, many of these people either buy the coupons, or they get them through expensive means, such as a newspaper or printing on a computer (if someone is homeless, it is hard for them to get a newspaper delivered or get internet service on a computer!). I also think some of these people get such a large volume of coupons through nefarious means. You should only get 1 insert of coupons, these people have like 100. Some of them are so cheap, so I do not think they buy 100 papers. I think they steal the inserts or get them through some dishonest way.

3 - These are "extreme" examples. Some of these are once in a lifetime shopping trips. They may have taken weeks of planning to get the maximum discount.

Much of what these people are stocking up on isn't really food. They're buying non-perishables such as body wash, paper towels, toilet paper, soaps and detergents. Or they're getting unhealthy items such as candy, chips and sugared breakfast cereals. Hopefully they also buy healthy foods for their families and we just don't see those items because coupons generally aren't available for fresh produce and meat. Coupons are used by manufacturers to get people to buy and try their products, so they are often used to promote new products or to justify buying products that people want that aren't healthy (like breakfast cereals that are mostly sugar).

Homeless people can't take advantage of extreme couponing because they don't have homes and therefore they don't have any place to put things or anywhere to cook.

They also buy tons of pasta. Mainly because it's cheap already and there's coupons for it. Not much you can do with pasta, soda, candy, chips, sugared breakfast cereals and pop tarts.

Plus few stores double coupons anymore. If they do, there are very strict limitations to what they will double. Google Jill Cataldo-she's an avid couponer and blogger. She's mentioned several times on her blog how many of the coupons that are used on the show are fake-with proof from Coupon Information Center to back it up.

One of the people on the show-the 16 yr old kid who didn't know what tampons were for-got a crap load of charmin toilet paper for free with coupons. What TLC didn't show you is a bunch of people complained to store, who confirmed he used the coupons. When the store owner learned he used fake coupons to get the toilet paper (about $1000 worth of Charmin TP) he told the mom to pay up or the store was going to press formal charges against the boy. And the mom was forced to pay up.

What TLC also isn't showing us is stores are breaking their own coupon policies for the sake of reality TV.

Are you serious? Thats the stupidest thing I have ever heard? Maybe they didn't know the coupons were fake? The store should just be careful about what kind of coupons they accept and alert a manager when a coupon is questionable. We are talking about a minor here. From my experience stores are very cautious when it comes to internet coupons. I remember a couple of years ago when I worked at a grocery store they had flyers posted at registers warning the cashiers to not take certain coupons. They really had cashiers working there stupid enough to take coupons claiming it could be redeemed for a free Play station 3.

Sometimes some neighbors, friends of the couponer give them their newspaper inserts.

Most coupons are ploys made by companies so you will buy their brand. There are few coupons for fresh produce.

Its should be obvious homeless people cant do extreme couponing. The papers they come in aren't free the people on these shows have to either buy the papers or get them through dumpster diving as well as through friends and family. They definitely cant just print up coupons online with their laptops.

There are also many people who don't have cars. There are also neighborhoods that don't have grocery stores so people have to take a bus or 2 buses to get to a grocery store.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.
