a coupon from 20 years ago...

has a barcode that is still active in today's systems? Eh??? With all of the updating and implementing of computers altered for the now, how the hell would something from 1992 garner a reading? Or was it manipulated by the show?

Bar codes are probably about 20 years old.

But it doesn't matter if there is a bar code or not, if it is a legit coupon with no expiration date, they just have to manually key it in.

But that episode was stupid - what is the point of keeping those old coupons???? Especially for items that might not even be manufactured anymore!

Canada for President 2012!

How true what you said taleeya about keeping old coupons. If these coupons were so valuable why weren't they used 20 years ago.

reply

They could have had a lot of the same coupon and used them all over the years.

Just a note in response to your statement "Bar codes are probably about 20 years old". I was just reading about bar codes last week. They began to be developed in the late 1940's and began to be perfected toward what we use today in the 1960's.

The first UPC (as we know them today) was scanned on June 26, 1974 at a Marsh supermarket in Ohio. The first UPC bar code was scanned on a package of Wrigley’s chewing gum.

Obviously it took a while longer to become mainstream but that was over forty years ago! Hard to believe they have been in use in some form even if in a limited fashion for grocery items for that long.

reply

Lilypad, it was rhetorical. From the stores being empty to the people applauding after the point of sale. Yes, I know everything is controlled from afar.

Scanning systems having been updated must've occurred at some point with the advances in tech. Something from 20 years ago would be seemingly non-existent.

I didn't know that some coupons from many years ago didn't have any Expiration Dates.I wish I had some of them.:-)

How did it last that long without fading? Do they keep them in special folders or containers? (I just saw my first episode yesterday. Here my receipts fade to plain white after about a year.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.

reply

Could keep them in vacuum tight sealed bags. They are almost always made from thicker and better paper than the typical store receipt.
