Comparable to US

What group of people would you compare them to in the US? They remind me of white trash, aside from their customs I guess. Appalled at the way they dressed.

reply

They look like the british version of guidos. If TLC is trying to shed a better light on gypsies they need to get rid of whoever edited this. They did a whole segment on how painful these large gowns are, and then cut to a little girls huge communion dress.

reply

I was just saying to my friends that they are the European version of Guidos but a bit more outrageous.

reply

alana110;

Read my post to peculiar purple, racist!

reply

You and your family have accomplished a lot! Be very, very proud. I am sorry anyone would use a term like that. Sometimes I think people just don't realize :(
Italians and Italian-Americans have contributed quite a bit to the world and this country.

Stay proud, stay blessed.

reply

Funny, my husband kept saying that they were just like the Jersey Shore kids. I don't see any comparison, other than being ridiculous and outrageous people.

The night is a very dark time for me.

reply

Yeah, I don't understand that comparison either. Maybe the people of Appalachia, the hillbillies in the Appalachian Mountains?

reply

No- I don't like the term "hillbillies", but those types of people don't really seem to be traveling lots. They seem to be more about farming and mining, and making an honest living, where another post indicated that these groups make their money by less than honest work.

The night is a very dark time for me.

reply

I am Appalachian and we are nothing like that. Even in the most backwoods, backwards places.

reply

nmbv:

Read my post to Peculiar Purple; I thought better of you, racist---silly me!

reply

I said the kids from the TV show Jersey Shore are outrageous and ridiculous. I don't know how that can be construed as racist. Care to explain? Do you disagree that Snooki and the Situation are outrageous and ridiculous?

Edit- I also didn't use the term "guido" in my post, so I'm not sure what having me read your response to Purple was for.

The night is a very dark time for me.

reply

nmbv:

I watch very little TV, in your OP you did not state it was a TV show or put the title in quotes, for anyone to assume that were so.

I have had to tollerate a lot of prejudice in my life, as an Italian Roman Catholic, especially that I dared to dominate the male world of surgery. Clinical prof., "Oh a Guinea with a brain,.....not on my clinic floor".

I could go on and on, why bother.

reply

The title was capitalized. It should have been pretty *beep* obvious. There was also the contextual hint of "the Jersey Shore kids", which should have told you I was referring to a specific group of people.

And let's not play dumb- I am sure you are at least slightly aware of the show Jersey Shore, particularly if you are quick to shoot down the word "guido".

Even if I had just meant people at the Jersey shore- there's nothing about that that says anything about "guidos", Italians, or anything of the sort. Maybe you should think for a moment before accusing others of racism- those were your own stereotypes and prejudices coming out there..

The night is a very dark time for me.

reply

nmbv:

I do not watch TV, if so it's an EXTREMELY rare event.

How can I invent by own bigotted stereotype when I have ALWAYS been, yes, since a child, surrounded by my family of wealthy intellectuals?

No, it was garbage that was thrown at me by bigots.

Repeat I was not aware of THAT TV show----why should I be as I have better things to view.

Makes me wonder why I am wasting my time here and now, however it is my time to waste.

reply

And again with all of that- why would you automatically associate the Jersey shore with negative Italian stereotypes if you had not seen the show? Italian people are not the only ones in New Jersey, and they certainly are not the only ones at the shore. Maybe you should read more carefully next time.

Edit- I also still don't believe that you would be so hyper sensitive and combative against racism towards Italian-Americans without being aware of "Jersey Shore".

And you're a successful person, we get it, we get it.. Congrats for "overcoming" a stereotype that is not really not that rampant (I know I have heard a few comments in life, but nothing serious or branding the entire group) and is not oppressing. You want a cookie?

The night is a very dark time for me.

reply

nmbv:

Ask yourself a stooopid question; why would I lie about a dumb show that I did not know was being broadcast.

We all have that Fios/Direct TV system, hundreds of channel. I told you that I personally, rarely watch TV; yet you insist (like some pedantic OC), that I do and I am a liar. That sounds so foolish!

Not oppressing, yeah, sure, you try breaching a man's domain in the 1970s at the height of the Vietnam war when everyone was cramming into college to avoid the draft! Much less, a surgical programme.

You have not walked in my shoes; nor I yours, so open up your mind.

QUID SPERAS DE PARVIS ANIMAS.

PS.................If the night is a very dark time for you; try reading a 16th C. classic (in the Spanish), of
....................."The Dark Night of The Soul"---by St. John of the Cross.

Siging off this is a waste of time.

reply

I love it when people take my signature seriously.

Why would you lie? Because you look like a fool. You just accused someone of being racist (have you no remorse for your attack on me?) on something completely ridiculous and irrelevant to race. Those Jersey Shore kids are in the news constantly, so not watching that channel or that show is not really a valid way of saying you have literally never heard of them. They are responsible for many of the negative Italian stereotypes today, something you obviously feel passionate about- and I'm supposed to play along after you insulted me when you really had no idea what I was talking about? Give me a *beep* break.

The only way you could have construed my post as racist is if you were aware of the show. Otherwise, it looked like I was just calling some people there ridiculous with no mention of race, gender, ethnicity, etc. You knew about the show, assumed I thought they were ridiculous because they were "guidos" (even though I said nothing of the sort), and accused me of racism. Now you are trying to backtrack and pretend that was not your thought process, when that was really the only logical way of viewing it. Own up to your mistakes. Maybe you thought I said "guido" when I didn't- just admit it, and stop running around whining about how you are some victim.

Not oppressing, yeah, sure, you try breaching a man's domain in the 1970s at the height of the Vietnam war when everyone was cramming into college to avoid the draft! Much less, a surgical programme.
What a stupid *beep* example. We were talking about Italian-Americans being oppressed, you dimwit, not women. Get with the program.

The night is a very dark time for me.

reply

nmbv:

Agood question, why am I bothering?

You are talking in circles and are too damned dumb to see it? I never heard or naturally saw the programme. ARE you that dense that you do not get it?

Are you that narrow minded that the only way to see anything is your way?

I know you did NOT ACTUALLY say "guido", I DO check prior to posting, do not patronize me as just being emotional. You are a racist otherwise if you were not we would not be having this tet a' tet. Honto neh?

Anata wa baka dayo!

reply

Going back to accusing me of being a racist, eh? For what? Thinking Snooki is dumb? Give me a break.

You didn't read my post thoroughly, otherwise you wouldn't have told me to read some bit about you berating someone for using the word "guido". You saw my post that said something about a group of kids in New Jersey- you automatically assumed I was talking trash about Italian-Americans. Why is that? Based on your (supposed) knowledge, that makes absolutely no sense.

I'm not being narrow-minded, I'm trying to tell you something is equivalent to 2+2=4. You are too much of an idiot to see this.

The night is a very dark time for me.

reply

I love posts from people like you: "I am far too superior to waste my time watching trash TV. But not too good to spend my time arguing with strangers on the internet over TV shows I am too good to watch."

I am so happy for you, that you are too intellectual to waste your time on something so stupid.

reply

Ciao, Molarmama!

I am almost positive that I have read that the kids on the Jersey Shore are not all Italian. I think I read Snookie is Chilean.

I am totally aware of the term being used to racially attack Italian-American's. Thankfully, I have not heard it in person since I move away from a big city.

I do see it used liberally on the internet. I don't know if people realize it may be offensive seems the kids on the show apparently toss it around with ease.

reply

Peculiar Purple:

I looked up in the Urban dictionary to be certain on the definition of the word Guido; yes come hell or high water the Italians are always insulted.

My family must be some sort of anomaly, as we are third generations surgeons, and judges that can speak numerous languages -----AND LIVE IN JERSEY!

reply

It reminded me of those "Jersey Shore" kids [the show, I've never been to the actual Jersey shore and so don't know what the real people are like]

I think I saw on a documentary some time ago that there is a colony of Travelers in Orange County, in Southern California in the USA. From what I remember, they are two gypsy families embroiled in some kind of feud down there. Also, I remember reading something in the newspaper one time awhile back about a couple of Travelers who were going around the country cashing fraudulent checks or money orders.

I also have seen a few people around once in a great while who fit the dress profile of gypsies or Travelers, although they looked more like the stereotypical gypsy fortune teller or gypsy cowboy type.

Here is a link to the gypsy feud in Southern California:

And another interesting one on Travelers in general:

reply

Thanks for the links. I know PBS aired a few Traveler Documentaries, too.

[deleted]

Again this is Irish Travelers AND NOT ROMA. Or are you going to spam this on every board?

reply

The two shows I saw also had Roma on it, not just Travellers

reply

I am sure they are most comparable to the Traveler's here in the US.

Guido's and Hillbillies? Really?

reply

I agree. Those other comparisons make little sense when we have an equivalent group (probably from the same origins) in the US. This is not solely a UK issue.

The night is a very dark time for me.

reply

Well the dresses reminded me of those pictures of ghetto prom and wedding dresses. Tacky is tacky.

reply

I love how some people choose internet forums to talk about how smart and rich they are. In that case, I'M A ROCKET SURGEON!!!!

Happy Hour... Now there's a misnomer.

reply

"wealthy intellectuals".. SMH.

I live in Arizona and we have them here. Ours are Scottish and Irish descent. They look and talk just like the ones on the BBC special except the accent is slightly different. I'm a makeup artist and they would come in Nordstrom all the time, one of them in particular I got to know quite well, I even have her cell phone number. The only difference is here they live in the same apartment complexes instead of trailers. The men all drive Chevy Silverado trucks and most of them do construction scams. The stories I could tell! I find the special fascinating, I just wish they would address how they earn their money and why people have problems with them.

reply

Do you mind if I ask what part of AZ? I lived in southern Arizona for years, most of my family is still there, and I never came across any of them.

It isn't surprising that they are there, as the weather is ideal for them, I just wonder what parts they stick around.

The night is a very dark time for me.

reply

I live in Chandler and that's where alot of them live. The majority of them leave during the hottest parts of summer. We would always laugh when it would cool off we'd see them and be like, "They're baaaack..." I even had a male one show up at my house offering to paint it, of course with the accent and clothes I knew what was up so I politely declined. ; )

reply

Ah, yes, I dated a guy from Chandler once. My mother's family lived in Mesa and Gilbert for a long time.

That doesn't surprise me that they would leave during the summer- it is ridiculously hot in Phoenix. They probably move like the snow birds!

The night is a very dark time for me.

reply

I think they modeled the show after the chick who used to have my phone number. Every company on earth is trying to find that girl. LOL
