Chicago

No self respecting Chicagoan would put ketchup on a hot dog! I'm sort of kidding, but not really. And Abby's accent is off. I think it's a good premise though.

reply

In Chicago, we put whatever we want on our hot dogs.
You gotta problem with that?

reply

Yeah we do, but if you grew up in the city, you know OP is correct. Come on now. =P

Funny how "real" Chicago natives knows about ketchup and hot dogs. Not some smart person saying, I'll put whatever.......". I didn't think much of the show up to that point. After seeing that I turned the show off.

reply

I'm curious, you guys worry a lot about the small details like ketchup (Which I can totally understand)... however, I wonder if the main girl is too soft? She seems not only young and innocent, but like she hasn't actually worked the streets. She's a cop, and the only thing I could think about, was maybe if she's from a family of cops and she's amazing at all of the training and tests, so maybe she's gotten the high end (rich neighborhoods) for the streets and every kind of cop for IA.
This isn't a comment on Chicago itself, but big cities in general.

I grew up in the city and I have always put ketchup on my hot dog. What part did you all grow up in?

reply

New Yorker that has never left this time zone here. Why don't you put ketchup on your hot dogs?

i was born and raised in chicago, and this is how i was born and raised to eat my hot dogs. All beef. mustard, relish, onion, celery salt on a poppy seed bun.... steemed, from my corner hotdog stand....

then again im from the southside, by white sox park(bridgeport)... you know... every show about the city is all about the northsiders, and the CUBS..... thats what irritates me... the main character clearly is southside, and yet they talk about the CUBS on the show... come on.... and as someone who has 2 uncles and a cousin on the force... this show is kinda dead on with how they stick together... but other things, its pissing me off...

reply

No ketchup on a hot dog. Ever.

I didn't notice the Cubs mention, but she talks about the Bears an awful lot.

reply

no they showed wrigley like twice in the pilot and she i think mentioned the CUBS.

and yes its very annoying how much she mentions the bears, its like we get it, you are a bears fan...

reply

Exactly! We get it, you like the Bears because you live in Chicago. I think they try a little too hard to convince us that the show takes place in Chicago. But Chicago for tourists, not Chicago for people who actually live here. The episode I just watched, Abby's partner makes some crack about how the only place anyone should eat pizza is Giordano's. Maybe if you don't know any better. There are so many better pizza places here!

reply

In Bridgeport(Mayor Daley's neighborhood), hotdogs DO have catsup on them, and Lou Malnati is the place for Pizza - Deep Dish!

If you remember, the "no ketchup" thing is a WEST COAST prohibition, first mentioned in the Clint Eastwood Movie "Dirty Harry", filmed in San Francisco in 1971.

reply

I grew up in bridgeport, lived there since i was born till i was 22 (im 27 now) and i have never heard of Lou Malnatis....

Everyone around there knows Phils is the best pizza(even though its not deep dish).... My dad worked at Lina's forever (he was friends with the owners, and Lina herself before she passed away) and even lina's would order phils ahahaha...

I never put ketchup on my dog when i was a kid, truth be told when i would go to the hotdog stand, I would usually get a tomale(cause they where cheaper)... I only sometimes would get a hotdog. The only thing wierd i would remember was my best friend would get a hotdog with mayo and a pickle on the side, to me it was gross... anyways...

I wish this show would show how a real southside "cop" family is... its starting to get on my nerves.

reply

I thought for sure the family would be Soutsiders. No one has accents. It's quite annoying.

And even though I'm from GA, I figured out real quick ketchup is not acceptable. I was screaming when they picked up the ketchup bottle. And they were naked dogs. Seriously? For once I'd like to see a show actually get the small bits that make Chicago.

And are they actually filming in the city? The street scenes seem off some how.

reply

no they are filming in canada... its like when they filmed ER they only filmed certain certain scenes... thats how this show is. the pilot was filmed in chicago though

reply

so does the no ketchup on hot dogs thing go for kids too? my nephew, born and being raised there, eats ketchup on his dog, he's 6. just wondering.

reply

I think i remember little kids eating hot dogs with ketchup but the hot dogs where cut up....

Something that made me made about this weeks episode is them talking about Giordano's..... Nobody from chicago eats there, that is the tourist place... or people from northwest indiana.... if you wanna know where real chicago people eat, its exclusive to what side you grew up on... I grew up on the south side, and we all crave phils pizza, or ricobenne's breaded steak..... This show, while i love that there is a show that is based in chicago i wish that they would do a little more research.... and another thing, we love this city, we are very proud to be from here, but we dont go around talking about it all the time... we just live our lives daily. I never in my life have started a sentence with "Come on, you can be from chicago and not....." thats just dumb....

Kids can get ketchup on their dogs but they might get a little grief for it from the employee, as a joke. I've seen a kid order a dog with ketchup and the guy working made a crack to the kid's dad, like "aw, man, youz gotta teach your kid the right way to order a dog!" He was just giving them a hard time. But most dog stands in the city and at least the West suburbs (I can't comment on other areas) don't serve them with ketchup, they come with mustard, onion, relish, tomatoes, cucumbers, celery salt, sport peppers, and a pickle spear. In a steamed poppy seed bun. Yum...I think I just decided what I'm having for lunch today!

reply

When I watched the promo for this on youtube, when the series first came out, I immediately was turned off when I saw a Chicago cop put ketchup on their hot dog. Plus their accents were terrible.
