To clear up the whole he does not look like a 'geek' thing

They explained this in interviews about the "geek" thing, a geek and a nerd are two different things, you are more thinking about nerds, geeks are someone who is obsessed with one thing, such as the character Josh was obsessed with anything with films so therefor he was a film geek. I hope that helps you all.

then what's a nerd?

so would a dork be considered a nerd or a geek, or a dweeb?

reply

No, a nerd is not "socially awkward." Well, I suppose, technically if you want to go about the stereotype for a nerd... A "nerd" is someone who is very, very book-smart. The stereotype would be tall, gangly, scrawny, plaid shirt tucked in, suspenders, pocket protecter, coke bottle glasses, mama's boy. That is the stereotype. But a nerd is anyone who is very very intelligent. They CAN be socially awkward, but then again there is a socially awkward person in every possible group, pretty much...

reply

so what would you call those socially awkward geek/dork/nerdy people you get at school? the ones with low self esteem.

reply

I've always seen it as:

nerds=good at academics

dorks/dweebs= socially awkward

geek= strong passion for _________ (video games/magic cards/etc)

It's better to be hated for who you are, than to be loved for who you're not.

reply

Dorks are not "socially awkward." DORKS are people who are not afraid to be themselves, no matter what other people think. If they seem weird to other people, then geeks just laugh at the fact that people think they're strange. And a dweeb is someone who is irritating-that could be because they're socially awkward, or because they're trying to fit in with people that they don't click with... Point is, a dweeb is that annoying person that everyone groans about when they see them walking towards you. Like a little brother to a big sister.

reply

Yet the big sister doesn't realize that little brother or sister thinks she is an idiot. Cool people who think they are cool are not, in fact, cool at all.

Umm... technically, dorks are whale penis. So, unless you want to scientifically call someone a specific, rather gruesome, cetacean appendage used for mating, then use it sparingly.

A lot of things in our society are often lumped together because A) it's easier for people to understand & communicate, and B) a lot of times certain things are given a generalized image thanks to Hollywood, and the media and that image might not be entirely correct as in the case with nerd vs. geek.

For example, you've heard the phrase, "Girls don't like nice guys", or "Girls like bad boys"? That's not entirely true.

Girls DO like guys who are nice and treat them right. What they don't like are guys who are clingy, whiny, obsessive, insecure, etc... And these traits are now synonymous with being "nice" for some strange reason while being confident, secure, etc. are associated with being "bad".

It might seem like semantics, but you'd be surprised at how many things are misconstrued in our society simply because a majority of the English language is based on connotation vs. specificity.

reply

Well said ferris! I completely agree. A lot of people just use dork, nerd, geek, or basically whatever comes to their mind first, though they are different.

sorry don't agree here, by that definition the star quarterback who is only into football is a geek. geek=nerd= someone not normally socialable that is into something considered intellectual.

This is the best awnswer I could think of to explain your question.
(if the link doesn't work anymore just google/image "graph dork geek nerd" or something along those lines).

reply

"Geek", "Nerd", and "Dork" are unkind words you shouldn't call other people.

reply

Actually, a lot of people choose to call themselves those words. Especially nowadays with fan conventions, graphic novels, fan fiction, superhero movies, and sci-fi tv shows increasing in popularity.
