I enjoyed this but wondered what the point of the part about the bloke having a baby he never knew about with the partially deaf girl was. It didn't seem to serve any purpose whatsoever.

I had the same thought. A possible explanation for this subplot is that perhaps they wanted to echo the main plot drama -a parent losing his/her young child- by introducing the story of a baby who dies shortly after birth. I think it's no coincidence that the parent in this case was Olive, Alice's childhood friend.
