Any other giallo homage films?

There's stuff like films by Brian De Palma (Dressed to Kill in particular) and a Japanese film I saw recently called 'Evil Dead Trap' which are clearly imitating the films of Argento, and recent/upcoming gialli 'Sororal' and 'Masks' (which appears to be almost a German Suspiria), but I'm thinking more along the lines of Berberian Sound Studio and 'Amer'.

Definitely Amer.

I already mentioned Amer in my original post, so repeatedly recommending me Amer isn't much help lol.

That Secret Chiefs 3 fake giallo soundtrack is great.

reply

yeah i almost forgot they did that...it was rather awesome..i did see amer 'cos of some sort of SC3 involvement... book of souls where are you?

reply

I've not heard of them being involved with Amer at all, are you sure? Yeah that album is taking forever haha, I'm sure it'll be worth the wait though. In the meantime check out their Xaphan album they did for John Zorn if you haven't already, it's stunning.

I didn't really think Berberian Sound Studio was an homage to giallos, it was more of an homage to old Eurohorror films in general. Ultimately I found it wholly unsatisfying but very stylish.

If you're looking for a good giallo homage, check out Eyes Of Crystal (2004) which is a great tribute to the old genre without being kitschy.

I second that opinion. I also think that it doesn't belong to the genres HORROR and THRILLER at all. It's a simple drama. SPOILER BELOW!

Mind that no one dies and there is no crime at all.

They are making an Italian NunPloitation flick ... exploiting nuns. I for one really felt that the tone and gratuitous gratuitousness implied from cutting the sound was consistent with a "modern day Italian exploitation flick about lesbian nuns and the masochistic priests that torture them for potentially being murderous witches." Which is most CERTAINLY on the giallo family tree. 

There are actually thee Evil Death Trap movies. I've seen the first two, and that was enough. They aren't as bad as the Guinea Pig or Red Room series, but they epitomize the trend toward torture porn in recent horror movies.

I've enjoyed most of Argento's films, but Mother of Tears was pretty incoherent which is nothing new for an Argento film. Of course, there are his two collaborations with Romero--the international of Dawn of The Dead and Two Evil Eyes. Now I understand Romero is remaking Deep Red

It’s interesting that the OP should mention De Palma. I kind of expected Berberian Sound Studio to be like his Blow Out: a giallo homage where the thrills materialise.

Julia's Eyes was pretty awesome, very giallo-ish

Although not as hyper-stylized as BSS or Amer, I thought the recent Maniac remake (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2103217/combined) with Elijah Wood was quite giallo in terms of the POV shooting and synth score. I haven't seen the 1980 original, but I recollect there being some US interest in giallo around that time with films like Eyes of Laura Mars.

Blackaria, is a french film, you're going to love it.

Don't know if it is of any interest but the Astron 6 group is currently working on a feature titled: The Editor. It is a comedy/giallo homage, but it will certainly be full of gore and probably other surprises. Definitely not a group of filmmakers for everyone, but it is 100% a giallo homage.

2009 Giallo, but it's such a bad film ! :(

The Strange Color of Your Body's Tears

Saw it at this year's London Film Festival - looked absolutely amazing but the story was so terrible the projectionist closed the curtains before the film finished, he was so keen to get out of there and get home....

I used to want to change the world. Now I just want to leave the room with a little dignity.
