Question about Unions

I just started watching episode 1. I thought I understood what unions were, but I don't understand what that union leader meant when he inferred that he would close down the Miramar if Ike didn't join a union.

How does he have that power or is he just using that as an expression? And how would not joining a union affect Ike's business.
I understand the picketing outside is bad for business but they wouldn't be there forever.

Thanks for any input.

They don't have to be there forever. They only have to be there long enough to impact profits to the point where Ike can't make his loan payments. He says several times during the pilot that that night (New Year's Eve) is absolutely critical and if things don't go well, he's done.

They don't have to be there forever. They only have to be there one more day.

Right. Thanks.

In addition to the disruption of the picketing, they were preventing the booze from being delivered on New Years Eve and Sinatra would cancel his show if there was picketing (and no booze). Mike (the union leader and Ike's childhood friend) knew this would seriously impact the Miramar Playa's already delicate revenue stream.

I just wasn't sure while I was watching if all unions are run like this, I just couldn't believe that they have that much power.

How did you watch this, I wouldn't mind seeing this again, but the site I watched it on is gone. Nevermind, I must've watched it on YouTube, just found it there.

Thanks!
