The Deaf community consists a group of individuals who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing, and yes there’s a hearing community.

And what does this "community" have in common other than their hearing difficulties? Who speaks for them and are they elected? Are all deaf people monolithic in their attitudes? Was there a survey taken that shows anything other than a tiny, vocal minority are the ones "taking offense" at this, just like any other "community?" As a "member of the hearing community" I'd like to state on behalf of my "community" that I'd be OK with a deaf actor playing the role of one of "us." I hope this sounds as silly to others as it does to me. There are no such things as "communities" of people who share physical characteristics, or God help us, what if a short person was cast as a tall character (*cough Tom Cruise*), or a person with homochromic eye color were to be cast as someone with heterochromia! To assume that all, or even most people who share such, think or behave in a certain way smacks of generalizing and stereotyping, which feels like a slippery slope to some murky and dangerous beliefs.

Thank you! It's like I asked what 2 + 2 was, got an "answer" of 5, and was being told to "seek help" when I explained how it was the wrong answer. We need logic/debate brought back as a required subject... It's as if the person I was talking to didn't notice all the other posts ITT before opening their mouth, either.

Some might expect me, as one who is seriously hearing-impaired to side with the protests on this. I don't.

Nick, while he is profoundly deaf in the book, does speak in dreams, so a speaking actor was necessary for the series. Having said that, I do feel that more realistic acting roles need to opened up for not only the deaf and hard-of-hearing but for disabled people in general.

2 Since you have seen the series and I haven't, I'll defer to your judgment. However, I read somewhere that a major part of the reasons for hiring Zaga was that in the series Nick DID speak. So, (My speculation here) Zaga's speaking parts must have been cut.

As it turns out, Nick never spoke at all in this miniseries. So there's some room for legitimate complaint here.

2 Any group can be stupid. Disabled people are no exception.

Granted, we do have legitimate grievances, so perhaps we should concentrate on them rather than this silliness.

I agree, the Deaf community shouldn’t be complaining that a hearing person is portraying them in a tv series/movie, because Deaf actors won’t be able to hear or understand what the director/crew/etc is trying to tell them. It can also be frustrating if a Deaf actor had a sign interpreter on set with them to help interpret everything that’s going on around them.

It’s probably easier for everyone involved on the set of movies/tv shows to get a hearing actor to play a Deaf character than to get an actual Deaf actor. No one’s stopping the Deaf community from making their own movies using their own Deaf actors.

2 The reason they hired a hearing actor for this role is that Nick does talk in his dreams. For that, a hearing (speaking) actor was needed. Like I say, I am hearing impaired, being 100% deaf in my right ear and have about a 70% loss in my left, so I can understand the concerns of those of us who have hearing problems.

There are legitimate issues that deaf and hard-of-hearing and other disabled actorsface, but I don't believe that this is one of them.

This P.C. idiocy has just been laughable for years now. I used to actually get angry like when the creator of Transparent said she would never cast a "cis" gender male in a trans role now. The backwards logic to this nonsense is all these trans, deaf, blind, gay whatever actors would absolutely shit themselves if you suggested they not be allowed to play straight or whatever character was not like them. Of course I realize blind isn't a great example but bottom line is acting is literally about playing someone else this whole line of argument is just another example of where this whiny, victim culture world is going and it sickens me.
