Not gonna be good

For a start they’ve got Josh Boone writing and directing, which going by this man’s track record is not a great choice for the story. The only stuff he’s made before this is syrupy soap opera fluff.

Secondly, a lot of the casting is all wrong. It doesn’t matter to me that Larry Underwood is played by a black actor, his ethnicity is mostly irrelevant in the novel, but the actor playing the part just doesn’t exude the egotistic, selfish confidence that the character had in the novel. The actor is too young and feels more like a Nick Andros type.

And Skarsgard as Flagg is such an uninspired choice. Do we really need this guy to play every King villain? He’s not even intimidating. Nor do I believe he has the charisma to lead an entire legion of followers to rebuild the country. I would picture an actor with more menace to them like Hugo Weaving, or even Garrett Dillahunt.

Thirdly, this series is obviously going to be set in the present day, which is a mistake. The original book was set in 1980, and most of its atmosphere and dread comes from the Cold War paranoia of the era, as well as Mother Abigail’s connection with the 19th century. Moving it to the present day makes it lose a lot of its power, as the best King adaptations are period pieces, or were at least filmed roughly around the same time as the book was released.

It’s been a while since I read this or saw the old miniseries, but I can’t remember who the character Stephen Breckinridge is

I don't see Stephen Breckenridge mentioned in the OP. Has it been edited?

reply

No, I just saw the name in the cast up above. Was that a character from the book?

Not that I recall. If memory serves, I've heard the name somewhere as well, but just where, escapes me.

OK, time for me to do a great big face-palm. I finally saw the character Stephen Breckinridge in the cast list. Still no idea who he is.

As of 8/4, he is not on the list anymore.

What's going on?

I took a look at the photos on IMDB.

One photo of Skarsgard leaning over a railing looks like Rhett from good mythical morning.

I also agree on his lack of charisma. Maybe we'll get luck and he'll prove us wrong.

I object to the race change of Larry Underwood. They did the same thing in the "Salem's Lot" miniseries from 2004 with the Matt Burke character and that was a terrible choice.

I don't really have a big problem with it other than the sheer pointlessness of it. That said, it didn't totally ruin the remake for me.

Same thing for the remake of "The Stand".

It's not a big deal since it's really not a huge part of the book, but part of Larry's character was that he was a white dude who sounded black in his music. Now you can't have that exchange when his mom makes a disparaging remark about him sounding black and he replies: "That brown sound do get around".

The could have picked a different character to change races on, I suppose, that would have been less altering to the original story.

reply

They also changed Ralph Brentner from a big burly mid-western farmer type to a tiny Native American woman.

reply

Well I hope they changed the character’s name as well.

reply

I'm happy-ish as long as this Larry isn't a rapper.

Me too. I'll watch it before I make a decision.
