So unfunny as to be surreal!!

TVLand hammers its viewers with endless commercials and hype about their unfunny original sitcoms, so like a brainwashed fool I had no choice but to watch a few episodes of "The Exes."

Man, this show is just not funny in the extreme. The jokes fall flat, the "comedy" is nothing but a sequence of lame sex jokes, and the characters have no rapport. The fat guy from "Seinfeld" seems to be from another show, having nothing to do with anything or anyone; he merely walks onto the set, delivers a few stupid lines, and walks off. The laughtrack has been set to "11" a la the amps on "Spinal Tap."

It hit me that the show is almost a surreal spoof of sitcoms in general. Some French auteur in the '70s or '80s could've produced something like this, as a satire of the generally vapid nature of American situational comedies, and critics would've praised it.

But instead it's the real thing -- they really think this garbage is funny, people. Or at least, they want us to THINK it is.

This show has funny moments and I watch each week, but the problem is that none of the episodes build up a story line. Each episode has random events (Holly hiring a hooker for Stuart, Holly dating a jockey, and so on) but none of the episodes connect. They need to develop on-going storylines.
