The problem with Happily Divorced...

I've, for the most part, enjoyed all of TV Land's original programming. I hated Retired at 35 and that ghastly reality show, and I think The Exes is their best show right now, because unlike Hot in Cleveland, it isn't telling the same joke over and over again.

I love Fran Drescher and consider The Nanny to be one of the best sitcoms of all time. But therein lies the real problem with Happily Divorced. Formulas, jokes and plot points are recycled from The Nanny episodes. Almost nothing feels fresh or particularly memorable. I feel like they're trying to recreate the magic that they had on The Nanny, but not really succeeding.

Having said that, I don't want this to get cancelled. It has slight potential to actually get better. I just wish the writers could create their own thing rather than letting it get stale and tired.

There was no problem with "Happily Divorced." The show was 25 times better than "The Nanny," a show with the fakest-looking set I've ever seen in a sitcom, with the world's worst supporting cast. "Happily Divorce" was fresh, funny, and kept me watching week after week, something "The Nanny" failed to do. If I have any complaint it was about Rita Moreno and Robert Walden. Neither fit in.

I pretty shocked that it got the ax.

If you're shocked it seems you don't read dailies,eh Salt????

Saltednut, I would like to know exactly what it was about Happily Divorced that you found original and fresh. I feel like character types and even some plots felt like rehashed episodes of The Nanny.

The show displayed some reasonable potential in its second year, but really never took off. Again, just my opinion.

Iheart I have to agree. Happily Divorced do seem like the show tried to gain some of The Nanny material instead of being original. It was great to see Renee Taylor again but for a minute I thought I was watching a Nanny spinoff. The Nanny was and will always be a classic to me. I love how The Nanny cast just clashed well and the set just look real. On Happily Divorced the set is nice but it has to much going on and the cast, I feel the bond a little bit but not too much.

The real problem is that they needed a HOT guy to be cast as Fran's ex.

That way, there would have been much more dramatic tension because viewers would have known WHY she married the gay guy in addition to the fact that he would have many suitors (or one-night-stands).

"Don't call me 'honey', mac."
"Don't call me 'mac'... HONEY!"

reply

It was too obvious he was gay.

Like what have you noticed that was recycled from the Nanny?
