As FD's mother they play(ed) basically the same character. Maybe Renee didn't want to play the same role and wanted to move on, but wouldn't this show be better if she was on it?
IMO Renee Taylor was the best part of The Nanny. Rita Moreno just flatlines with me.
Rita Moreno is nice but I can't get over the fact that she's Puerto Rican. I know it's supposed to be acting but she doesn't even look Jewish or have any of the mannerisms. Renee Taylor was the better mother. She really was the best part of The Nanny.

I agree, I think Renee Taylor or someone more similar to her would make the show better. There is something about Fran's mom on Happily Divorced that just doesn't work for me either. I don't find her compatible as Fran's mom.
shareI don't agree. I think Rita Moreno is just fine as Fran's Mom. Renee Taylor is basically playing the exact same character as she did in The Nanny and I like the fact that she (playing the neighbor) and Rita's character don't like each other very much. I also like the fact that we see Fran's Dad unlike in The Nanny where he was always offscreen. Really enjoyed the episode where they brought in Yetta (Can't think of her real name) as Renee's Mother.

I think with a new concept and show then Renee should not have played her mom again. Maybe the old Maxwell should be playing her gay ex? No, new show, new cast.
shareWhen I first saw the show and then I saw Renee guest star on the show I was like she should be playing the mother. Now I'm kind of used to seeing the Rita Moreno she isn't that bad for playing Fran mom on Happily Divorce. I think if Fran would have kept the same characters almost it would have been The Nanny 2. Now I'm just waiting for 1 of the 3 kids to show up on the show or Maxwell. Maybe Val and Niles.

shareLiving with Fran wasn't a sequel or spin-off to The Nanny, there just happened to be some slight coincidences with the characters. Charles Shaughnessy plays Fran's ex-husband, but his name is Ted and their kids are not twins.
I would give anything for a revival of The Nanny, even if it's just a singular episode special!
