Problem with this movie is they weren't great dancers

They were ok but compared to other dance movies, they were pretty ordinary dancers

The problem is people call this a "dance" movie" or something else an "action film" - the problem is the fact people label the movies into one thing.

This inevitably leads to "comparison" to other "similar" films to rate "good" or "bad".

It's a screwed up system. A movie should be just a "movie" and needs onto to convey a story on its own terms using the means it wants to. It shouldn't need to match the dancing of other movies.

This movie took a more realistic approach to the dancing. Which means less staged up wirework flashyflashy stuntathon routines and more genuine routines. The focus of this movie was tapdancing - which isn't really about the flash but rather the beats of the feet that move fluidly and changing speed in an instant. Just like the movie's plot kept changing from relaxed love to energetic rivalry on a switch of a beat.

This movie put story over flashy and the chosen styles make sense for that story. The story was different - like a dance version of Romeo and Juliet - and it was acted well, the dialogue was natural, and overall it is nice experience to have when you press play.

To me that makes it a good movie. Whether it is a good "dance" movie is irrelevant because that causes you to focus less on the movie as a whole and only on specific bits which without context lose their quality.

If all you care about is the "dance" bit, don't bother watching dance movies - just watch the dance bits on youtube.

Define they? I hope you mean more along the lines of Hough and not BoA because the latter can dance her ass off.

I get where you're coming from but also disagree somewhat. I think they were good dancers but for sure the overall choreography and dance segments were just not very exciting, especially given the constant stream of dance movies coming out these days, many of which ramp up the drama and dance pyrotechnics. Part of the issue is that they chose to have Derek focus on tap which really limits the degree that he can wow us with spectacle and dance production.
