Why are they saying Missing is certain to be cancelled???

every week, Missing beats Community by over 4 million viewers, and gets the same demo percentage. clearly, Missing is not aimed at 18-49 as much as the other shows at that time, but 7.8 million viewers is nothing to sneeze at... and yet, tvbythenumbers and other websites have marked Missing as certain to be cancelled, while Community, with approx. 3.9 million viewers, is marked as likely to be renewed... something doesn't make sense here! renewals should not solely be based on the 18-49 demo percentage. viewership should count too! Missing has the fanbase, they just don't fit the demo that gets reported.

Shows on NBC have worse ratings therefore lower rated NBC shows are more likely to be renewed. Community is cheaper since it's a half hour comedy and one more season will make it eligible for syndication. 18-49 ratings matter much more than total viewers because 18-49 buys the products advertised, while those outside the demo do not.

The best strategy is to simply enjoy a given show and take cancellation threats as they come. I was damn certain Alias would die a few episodes in but it survived a few seasons. Just the same I blew off threats to Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and it barely got a 2nd season. Cancellation at the end of Season 2 didn't surprise as it had gotten too far away from the weekly shoot 'em up action, & dealt more with a season-long arc.

At the end of the day, if there's a rule to series cancellations its that one can never tell what will survive & what will get canned. Some series' doom is pretty evident from the get go, but others can leave you wondering "what the hell happened?"

I am so happy Alias stayed on as long as it did - the show was so worth it. It was def one of my fave shows back then. Now I am hoping Nikita that is on the CW will get another season, but its not looking so good-- which will piss me off if it does get canceled. I tried watching Community, and I just couldn't get into it
at all. Sometimes I just don't understand what networks are thinking when they cancel shows -- I guess I will never know.

reply

Agree with you there - Alias and Nikita are some of my favorite shows. What I don't understand is why Nikita is on the CW, where all the other shows are gossipy, backstabbing, love triangle types. The people that like Nikita aren't likely to watch the other shows, and for the people that like the other shows Nikita is too high on the intellectual scale. And so, Nikita doesn't seem to get many viewers.

We need to do something! :)

I think the show may be brought back, because it was supposed to be a summer show anyway. They could hold it and run it from say June to September by showing 13 episodes. I won't lie, I like seeing Ashley Judd every week, but that's just a bonus, haha.

reply

I think the reason it will be cancelled is because the whole point of this show is for Becca to find Micheal and once she does and everything is over. So would the show.

reply

Since Missing has ended on a Cliff hanger I am guessing / hoping that it will be back next year.

I watch The Vampire Diaries w/my son, that is ONLY bc I love anything to do w/vampires, and its something to watch w/my son...but I get your point -- Nikita rocks !!

reply

I don't know what possible storylines could happen for season 2 since I don't want the kidnapping storyline to be dragged out.

reply

yeah i know; i can't see how they could drag the kidnapping story line for a 2nd season, some ppl are saying that paul and becca start working together to help find missing ppl w/the help from dax and his crew (of course this is after they get their son back).. still not sure how it would all work though.

reply

The Winstone family was reunited in tonight's episode. Then a week later, Becca went to get the car and a new mystery enfolds. I feel the producers should have cut out one week later footage upon the cancellation news.

reply

I agree - and now I'll just pretend that last scene didn't happen and they lived happily ever after :-).

reply

I know this was rumored to be a 10 week series but I wouldn't mind if they left it on permanently. I like the characters and think it would be easy to make it into a regular series given the chance.

reply

The one thing, besides the terrible writing, that I don't like about this show is the characters LOL. I was rooting for this show. But it gets worse every episodes. GRRR

reply

I agree and they don't take hulu ratings into account. This a great show. I cant wait to see it every week!

This show will die because of its own bad acting, bad script, bad story line and feminine power propaganda no one believes.
Bingo.

I've tried to like it, but the show keeps getting worse each week

reply

Same for me.

"Time for real men to call this out when you see it."

Let me know when you meet one.

reply

It's so predictable. I watch with my wife and usually can say what the next scene will be before it airs. Beautiful scenery but so so acting and too many implausible happenings. Basically a crap show with a couple of good looking stars.

reply

Ditto.

Spoiler:

I knew the kid was going to throw the guy off the train. How predictable was that. Also when said bad guy found the piece of fabric left behind. Sheesh!

reply

I hope not! I love this show. Although I do wonder how they will manage to make this series last long, just on a case of her trying to find her son.

reply

They can make for more plot after they find her son -- easily. AND nothing says that finding him is going to be successful in season one, or end happily either. They can drag it on, have something happen to him (duh) and then re-ignite her CIA career. I'm sure it hasn't all been storyboarded, yet, based on ratings, time slots, etc etc. We all know how iffy TV programming is. How else to explain some of the dog shows that are still on and should have been cancelled long ago, and some terrific shows that were cancelled.

I laugh about the 18-49 demo. I am in it, on the higher end. I DVR 90% of my programming because I hate commercials, and I rarely see a commercial that pertains to me anyway. I really think TV needs to take a closer look at how they determine a show's worthiness when you take in account how many people watch TV like me, or on the computer, renting season DVDs, etc. I enjoy Missing, Awake, and a couple of other newbie shows that are on the bubble. Sometimes I think that the problem with these mid-season shows is that people are already used to watching what they are without adding another;sometimes there is just too much on a single night. Example is that this season on Tuesdays I had three shows on all at 10pm. Since the DVR only records two shows at once, this is problematic. It worked for me because one show was on cable and it repeated at other times. So therefore a lot of people can have too much, so the shows don't get watched. This stuff should go on in the summer, where it can be watched more.

reply

The daily ratings actually take into account DVR viewing up to I believe 3 AM the same day. 7 day DVR numbers are also released later on, but for some reason are considered useless by the networks. Don't know why same day DVR viewing counts and 7 day doesn't since people don't watch the commercials at either time.
