Video game acting

Acting like you're playing a video game... Is it really THAT hard? You could just... play a game.

Dan Fogler constantly changing grip on the controller just makes me cringe. #StupidTVtropes #Unnecessarilybadacting

I do that regularly, some games require you to change your grip based on what you're doing at any one time.

In FIFA 12 for example I use my right index finger on the R2 button to sprint with the ball, but when I'm defending it's impossible to call in an additional defender without using the R1 button, so I shift my index finger to R1 and bring my middle finger to R2 for when I need to sprint with a defender. This requires somewhat of a shift in the position of my hand.

Sure, Fogler's hamming it up a bit but it's hardly something new.

It would be better if they had like virtual reality goggle sets on, and body pieces like the power glove, this way they could be thrashing about while playing the game.

I'm not talking about that kind of switch, I'm talking about when he drops the sticks, and starts mashing the ABXY (arrow, square, ring etc on PS*-controllers) with his fingers instead of his thumbs.

Sure I've seen it before, but that doesn't make it less stupid or unnecessary.

Heh, way to jump aboard the assumption train.

Your parallel makes sense if the manicures were performed by monkeys wearing top hats. If the backdrop is stupid, the dialogue fails too. Anything that takes you out of the scene. It has nothing to do with video games.

I read a blog post form a gamer/actress and she said she was doing a video game commercial and she just played the game. The director told her she wasnt being realistic enough. It makes sense if you watch someone playing a game the right way it actually looks quite boring because the movements are so small. If you are moving around like they do in every tv show or commercial it looks more appealing

I LOVE this show and love Dan Fogler in it.. HE was one of the things that got me interested in the show. But I completely agree with the sentiment. It's just weird and distracting. I'm not a video game nut but I play.. and that's bad over-acting. I know he's doing it for comedy sake and I love everything else he overacts in the show. His screaming is classic.

Of course, alex, you know they're not going to actually play a game. There's no game there.. learn something about production! There's a camera shooting them where a tv would be. So get real on that. But this performance does make it seem that he's never even ever played a video game before.. and I'm sure he has.

What you're gamertag Dan?

I agree with you, it's stupid. It's obviously stupid, even takes you out of the moment. I mean seriously why can't anyone play video games correctly on tv or say goodbye before they hang up the freakin phone, or explain to their partner what they know the audience just saw happen earlier!!!

I think the ridiculous controller movements are more to do with his wacky character than trying to accurately model how one uses a controller in real life.
