Should be good... considering Mark stole my *beep* story

I met Mark Webber last year in Minneapolis at The Electric Fetus off of Franklin. We got to talking and he seemed pretty chill. So we shot the sh!t for a bit and I told him about a book I was working on at the time and it has the exact same plot as his "new screenplay". Silly me, I only have the second half outlined and never finished it. But I did tell him all the key plot elements and characters stories. I guess it could be a coincidence considering the main idea of the story isn't too original. But really dude? I have several documentations of my story, including a local publication of the premise.

I really hope the key elements aren't the same (which are what really makes my story it's own). Pretty pissed....

If it's true, buddy, I'd be pretty pissed too. But the LAST thing I would do, in your situation, is post anything here. I'd seek legal counsel or be in danger of sounding like a whiny biotch.

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."

You are so right. If it was me, I would remove this post right now and let the movie be shown in peace. Then sue. You don't want to warn his lawyers. Also, I want to see the movie, and you are going to delay it if he sees this complaint.

This film is an improv film. It is an hour of Mark just playing with his child and an added part scene/ date scene that adds about thirty minutes. Also I thought it was pretty terrible.
You should be fine. I don't think he stole anything from you.

A better signature.

The exact same plot? Exactly? <shaking head>

Your book was probably about a single parent struggling with the loss of the other parent and trying to raise a young child at the same time. That's not an original idea on your part to begin with.

Vader: I find your lack of faith disturbing.
Tarkin: Enough of this! Vader, release him!

reply

Well its been nearly 2 years since the OP posted... and given that he didnt delete it, I think its safe to assume that the plot for this film at most can be argued as only inspired by the OP and not copied, I am assuming.

And we are assuming that the cat who posted his complaint here is the only plagiarism complaint regarding this film. There might be others. And this movie didn't get great reviews, did it? There're always some dudes who say they met the filmmaker once and that said filmmaker ripped them off. And in some cases, it's true, the guy was seriously ripped off. But in most cases it's just yammer.

I don't think anything was ripped off. This wasn't one of those stories when you hear it you're like "Whoa, that's really creative! I wish I would write something like that!"

if you were a writer you would probably choose correctly between its and it's

I don't believe he stole your story, but let's say for a moment that he did...

So he stole a story that you never finished, what's the big deal? You weren't doing anything with it anyways. My question to you is why get all bent out of shape over a script you never intended to finish?

There are writers, and there are people who write.

Also, the movie was terrible, so I wouldn't be bragging to people that you came up with the premise. I would stay as far away from this mess of a film as possible.

But also, he didn't steal your unfinished screenplay.
