I just want to comment on Rockwell Fassbender (?!)'s review. A small correction. Belgium is not part of France. It is an autonome country. The Dardenne brothers are Belgian - born in Liege. 'Le Gamin au Velo' is set in Seraing, which is a BELGIAN city/village. Nothing to do with France. The only connection to France, is maybe the name of Cecile de France (who also happens to be BELGIAN). Thank you.
The Flemish will shoot you for saying Belgium = France. And as Germany shares the same currency does that mean Germany = France + Belgium? They've been waiting a long time to hear an affirmative to that Q.
Why problem make? When you no problem have, you don't want to make ...
When this movie was shown in the U.S., it was in French with English subtitles. Since the actors in the movie were speaking French, we could only assume it was a French film. What else could we have thought? Thank you for your explanation.
Agreed. The only clue that the movie was NOT taking place in France was when the thug asks Cyril asks if he is from the Boy's Home in 'Theux' which, afterward, I was able to Google and find in Belgium.
I went back through the movie looking for a clear shot of a car tag, not an easy feat. With red numbers, they are only slightly different from a French car tag.
The gas station/Shell-mart where the boy's father had his 'for sale' sign, was "AVIA", a chain located throughout all of Europe, not regional to a specific country.
If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and looks like a duck, it's very easy to make the assumption that it must be a duck.
It might be easy to make that assumption when you are at the cinema but when you come to IMDb and write a review, continuing the assumption, presumably with reading nothing on the site about it, seems lazy. Also the Dardennes brothers are pretty well known film directors from Belgium and Jérémie Renier is a well known Belgian actor too - he plays the kid's father.
