the ending

SPOILERS

I loved this film, and I don't know how others who liked it felt, but for me the ending did not work at all.

In my opinion, the film should have ended when Samantha and Cybil ride bikes together and make barbeque plans with their friends. I would have loved this ending, leading the audience into thinking the film would end with them riding off into the distance, only to give us this one last beautiful scene, and then ending it.

But no, the film goes on this whole other bit about the fight with the son and the falling out of the tree. This sequence didn't work on so many levels: it was poorly set up, poorly worked into the film, cut against the film's entire structure, and worst for me was that I have no idea what the point of it was. Obviously the filmmakers intended something with this sequence, but I got nothing, nothing that I hadn't already gotten earlier in the film.

Someone please give me something. Even if I didn't like the ending, I'd still like an idea why it was included. I really loved the film up to that point and if they ended it on that barbeque phone call, it'd be one of my favorite films. Alas...

Yeah he should have died. Would Samantha still have been liable for the damages?

I felt this sequence was heavy-handed and as you've already said, it offers nothing already shown in The Kid with a Bike's characterisation. Though I did see the meaning of this sequence, that Cyril understands his previous behavior has consequences and his indifferent response to the attack shows his dedication towards reforming himself.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.
