Surprised

Not in a good way.

I feel this film lacked a great deal. The characterisations were dreadful. I didn't see how any of them developed to give us an insight to them. The men seemed overly macho and well... the liked women but there was nothing else. No dialogue to establish anything further. There was no chance to even engage with the characters either.

I would say this is down to bad naive script writing by a Director who appears to do well at the festivals and we all know what happens at the festivals.

Was it enjoyable to watch? Yes... I didn't feel the need to get up and disappear too much because I could feel there was some end to this somewhere. I do feel the basis of the film was to convey changes in Turkey to engage with the west. I feel this is what the film wanted to tell us.

Now... does that make a good film? The director, I applaud for not making it too sensationalised or glamourised but that did make it lose some of its charm too. It is a film after all and not a documentary but I don't think he could have conveyed these characters in a film. Oddly I wouldn't explode if I had to watch it again but it's not something I would do in a hurry.

I am not saying it was flawed. Technically it is a good film but I felt the story could have been told a lot better but how I don't know because I think the Director told whatever he wanted to. I just feel although it is an important thing to account it doesn't make for overly exciting subject matter.

I think I got it. I just don't feel the premise is strong enough for a great film. You could have some great qualities for most of the film but if they don't gel together the film will be pretty dire.

It's unfortunate but this film has stuck with me ever since and I can't for the life in me grasp what was so good about it. I've noticed his (Ceylan's) films do well at the festivals but nowhere else. We can deduce from that, it's a seller on the grounds of festival buzz and some pompousness.

I want to say it was dreadful and I guess it was. I can understand what they were trying to say in this film and it's worthy but wow it was dull!

i feel its quite a masterpiece. da humor is subtle at timez and quite dark while other timez its quite rotfl. i feel da theme is much more universal tho wat u mentioned can def be included as secondary or tertiary themez. basically, no man is an island, it takez a team of ppl 2 do most thingz in life, and in dis case, 2 solve a murder case. everybody has a role. da cop does his job, then da lawyer, and now its up 2 da examiner and da lawyer lookz at him sternly be4 passin da torch - its in ur handz now, he sez - wid some apprehension bec it lookz like he has ulterior motivez. and sure enuf he screw up da whole process by lyin. daz all it takez, 1 bad gear in da assembly line.

da cinematography is quite stunnin and spooky at da same timez. it feelz it has a grand scale ala true grit remake. da actin seemz impeccable but then i can only read da subtitlez. dis is prolly 1 of da best foreign filmz ive seen 4 a while.

I'm sorry but while I see what you are saying I really don't want to offer the glory of genius subtext to this film when so many other films do it so much more finely.

If this story had a very impressive message about the world it should be greater than every person plays his part.

I respectfully disagree, Mr Tribbiani. I think there's an incredible amount of detail packed into this film; it's just very subtle, for the most part. It says a whole lot about Turkish rural attitudes, the different ways people process the events of life, the position of women and men's attitudes to them, the dynamics within families and relationships, the difference between town and country, and indeed the relationship between truth and fiction and the way narratives impose their own logic on events. Also stunning landscape photography and some good jokes. In addition, there's a murder mystery for us to solve. Definitely slow, but one needs time to think about all that stuff, plus it runs at kind of a rural pace....

I used to want to change the world. Now I just want to leave the room with a little dignity.

It looks like you're either trying far too hard to be "different" or didn't make it past grade 1 in English. Either way man, learn to write first before you try and make a contribution.

Wow, so glad I'm not the only one baffled by the great festival reception and the current 8.4 imdb score.

Well, on second thought, I'm not so much baffled by the festival reception. This is exactly the stuff the judges at european festivals WILL lap up and ask for a refill.

Umm... this is the most ridiculous and the most incorrent interpretation i've heard that's uttered for a film. With which part of your body were you watching this film?
No wonder you didn't like this film. I suggest you watch it again with your eyes this time and without playing with your phone.
