Is there anyone else here that's not too impressed with the show?

I was looking forward to this show VERY much, considering I used to watch Whose Line (American one) all the time, never missed an episode. But this show is just.. underwhelming. To be fair, I've only seen a few episodes, but I just don't find it that entertaining to go out of my way to watch it every time. A few problems I have with it..

1. Games go on way too long. Sure, sometimes they'd be too short on Whose Line, but I think that was a good thing about it though, they usually ended them on a high note, before it got stale. Look at Greatest Hits, used to love the game, but now the do ONE song. I didn't use to watch it to hear a full length improv song, I liked to see how quickly they could come up with a variety.. not to mention the commentary in between was always funny. With other games, I don't even remember what's supposed to be going on in the game half the time. To add to that, if you happen to miss the first minute or so of the game, you have NO idea what is going on, so it's more awkward to watch than anything.

2. The show is too short. Really? 3 games? Plus, like I said above, if you miss the first minute or so of that game.. you're lost and pretty much just missed 1/3 of the show.

3. Again, I haven't seen a whole lot of episodes, but from what I've seen.. do they even USE everyone in it? I swear I saw an episode where I didn't see one of the guys get used at all. A lot of the time you just have like.. 5 people standing there, watching 2 others with a "host." I also don't like that they break up the momentum so much to get audience suggestions all the time.

I mean, I'll try giving it another chance, but it's very disappointing from what I've seen. Any episodes people recommend? If not, at least I know Whose Line is still on ABC Family at least..

You pretty much summed up this show for me. The performers are still brilliant (hello Jeff Davis) and there have been funny moments, but the format of the show is really dragging it down. It may be good to take in as a live show but it doesn't translate on screen.

Trust me, it's not just you. Being a big fan of Whose Line myself, I was eagerly awaiting this show as well. From the first episode onward though, all it has been (to me) is a big, giant disappointment, one that rarely ever keeps me wanting to come back and see if the next episode will be better.

Here's my problems with the show...

- Basically what you listed as #1 and #2. The games really do go on for way too long. They go from "This could be funny" to "Alright, enough is enough, move on to the next game now".

- One of the reasons why I think Whose Line was such as great show was because of Ryan and Colin. When those two worked together, they made any game hilarious. Wayne Brady was almost as good, if not just as great at times, though he really had that specialty when it came to the games that involved songs. It was those three that, in my opinion, made Whose Line so great and memorable. Unfortunately, that's where Improv-A-Ganza went wrong. For me, there's a reason why Brad, Chip, Jeff, Greg, etc. weren't there as much as Ryan, Colin, and Wayne were in Whose Line; because they just weren't as funny. Granted, they had their moments, but they were never as good as those three. Taking them out of the show would have probably been disastrous for Whose Line, and that's what's going on here. Without Colin, Ryan, and Wayne Brady working together like they used to, the show just doesn't have what it used to... And having the not-so-funny people being in like every game and in every episode is really hurting the show. I do get that Ryan and Colin are getting older (therefore can't be as wild as they used to be), but they are what made the show for me back in Whose Line, and without them, most of these other guys just can't hold a candle to the Whose Line legacy that they left (again, in my opinion).

Basically put, they just don't have that golden comedy wit that those three had.

I've given the show multiple chances, but it's never made me laugh that hard. Perhaps they'll get better over time, but after 20-some episodes, my hopes aren't really high that it will. It's a show trying to be as great as Whose Line, but will never reach it without their star players.

I don't think any show is going to be as good as WHose Line is but if this is the closest were going to get, I'll take it. The reason it seems like some performers sit out for a whole episode is because its 20 live shows split up into 40 episodes. I personally think they should've just aired the hour long show so it felt like it had more continuity. Also its a little disappointing when you see someone's name in the opening and they don't do anything the whole show.

I think there's been a lot of good stuff on this show. I hope they get more episodes and have a chance to work on the format. If they're going to keep the same format, I think they would benefit from having less performers each episode, so everyone gets more to do. That or they need to do more group games and less two person games.

I also wish there was more Ryan and Colin but it looks like Colin couldn't make it for some of the shows.

And as for Wayne, we're lucky he was able to be there at all.

By Zeus, what sort of jackassery is this?

I do agree with you with the most of your points, but not so much about the lack of the Colin-Ryan-Wayne banter. The rest of the guys weren't given much time to shine in the first place when they were on Whose Line - Colin and Ryan were in every episode, so of course you'd be able to recall more funny moments between them. Besides, Colin is funny on his own, and so is Ryan. They're also funny when they're performing with other people besides each other.

One thing that people really need to get into their heads is that this show is NOT Whose Line 2.0, and it's not trying to be. It's a different show with a rotating cast, and not everyone is going to be in every scene. So if the Colin-Ryan schtick is the only thing that's allowed to be funny, might as well get rid of everybody else! They're still trying to find their footing, and the cast members are still adjusting to the different chemistry between them I think. They're good enough performers to not need a 'perfect partner' to be funny.

Also, while Drew performing in every single episode is REALLY hurting the show IMO, guys like Jeff (really the breakout star here I think!), Chip, and Ryan are enough to still salvage the scenes.

Bottom line, I think you'd enjoy it much more if you stopped drawing comparisons between Whose Line and Improv-A-Ganza. For a new show, I think it's doing great. But Drew needs to take a step back. :B

They seem to never be able to win with anyone. First WL got gribed about the games being too short now people complain that with this reunion type show that the games are too long! What the hell do you want from them? I (as many do) love this show and opportunity to see these wonderful talented sweet guys back on my tv screen. I laugh a lot and believe me I don't laugh very easily. Also I love this show because it allows me to escape the bores of life and just have 22 minutes of pure joy! I don't care for Kathy, and Heather much. I think keeping it a guys club would've been better but I will take what I can get. And though Drew gets grief for not be as high caliber as the others being a study of Improv he has improved a lot over the years! Sometimes his mess ups are the funniest parts! If you expected all the games of WL there are rules and copywright policies so they cant use the games. If you notice they have a couple of similar games but with different names.

So again what do you want from them?

As I said in the original post, I don't think the games were too short in Whose Line.. I think they were just about right. These just go on way too long. Also, how do you know theres rules and copyrights on the games? I mean.. can you even DO that? They're games, I can see them copyrighting the names maybe, but I highly doubt they restrict them from PLAYING the games.

I gotta side with luvs-3; I'm just happy this incredibly talented bunch is back at work again! Okay, so the show's not flawless, but it makes me laugh and that's all I can ask for.

Patrilot, I would recommend episodes 7, 9, 11, 12, 13.

Yes, every skit isn't amazing, but there are some that are seriously funny. So I have to side with luvs-3;

I find the show a lot more loose and fun than whose line, which really is all we can compare it too besides the short lived green screen show,...

more people, more diverse, not singing all the time. It's already become one of my must see shows often getting me to cry in laughter!

I have Whose Line? season one on DVD and it didn't exactly set the world on fire at that stage either. Give Improv-A-Ganza a chance. It will probably get better.

reply

The games on too long. There are more performers, so each grouping that we remember from Whose Line gets less time to work together. The most notable difference is the lack of Collin/Ryan teamwork.

Overall, the show is still funny and much better than no improv at all.

reply

I'm not too impressed with Drew and Kathy Kinney. I'm sorry, they just don't have it. Aside from these to, the team works pretty fine. It's nice to see Jeff taking initiative.

Of course I agree that the format is also wrong

I think the camera-work and editing is the biggest distraction and hindrance from/to the comedy of the show. In whose line they'd display all of the characters in a scene at all times as if you were watching from the audience so that you could see all of the the reactions and chemistry in real-time (occasionally breaking for a close-up face shot but then immediately returning to the wide view).

With this new show, for example in a scene with two people, they'll do a close-up face shot of one character speaking or acting leaving out completely the other actor, and then when the other actor responds they'll do a close-up face shot of him/her leaving the other out. This breaks up the chemistry utterly.

What they need to do is just have a camera that shoots the entire stage and just stick with that.

Now granted, I'm coming in a bit late to this show, but I was watching WLLIA episodes on Youtube, and I saw in the suggested videos box, this show called Improv-a-ganza. I looked it up, and I was thrilled that they had "remade" WLLIA, for a newer generation. I eagerly watched the first few available episodes on Youtube.

Boy was I disappointed.

I don't think any improv show can quite compete with WLLIA, and I'm ok with that. Trying to make a "better" WLLIA would probably be impossible. Nothing beats the original. But this Improv-a-ganza, sucked IMO.

I agree with most of your points: The games run waaaaay too long, they just aren't funny (I watched Ryan and Colin do a couple scenes, and was simply not impressed. And it's Ryan and Colin!), and....yeah, it's just terrible.

I don't know if it's the new set, the different games, how many years have passed, too many performers, or some other disaster, but.....yikes.

Ah well, I guess back to watching WLLIA on Youtube, and wishing this show was celebrating its 30th (date?) season....

...and that's all I have to say about that.
