'you can't play OUR characters:' more backlash against black casting

"Fans often seem to believe that if a character is changed from white to black, they will no longer be able to identify with that superhero" Aaron Kashtan, a postdoctoral fellow at Georgia Tech who teaches a course on transmedia storytelling, wrote in an email to me. Kashtan adds that this is an example of "unconscious or overt racism"—a point underlined by the fact that the barriers to identification are so clearly arbitrary. Certain different people—Jews, or Irish, or folks with a hide made of orange rock—can be points of identification. Others, especially African-Americans or anyone with dark skin, can't. The issue here isn't staying true to the original. The issue is racism.

Yea they should remake coach carter with all whites and 1 black guy.

How about a remake of Shaft or Super fly with a white guy in the lead. I think it's a gimmick when you recast classics based on race. I am white and loved Shaft and would think it stupid as hell to see some white guy play it. Mostly these remakes are all lame anyway.

Your link is not the same thing. That is whites playing minorities, which was terrible, but it's not remaking films that featured a minority character and making the character white.

an example of this is the character katniss in the film "hunger games."

the character is written as a darker complected girl, but the actress who plays her is white.

You keep giving examples that aren't relevant. I am talking about give me an example of a movie that starred a black person that was remade using a white person. Not characters from books, not white people in black face or yellow face but a famous black character replaced as a white character.

katniss is not a white girl in the book, but she is played by one in the movie.

Excellent post.

Let's also add Angelina Jolie who played the real life Mariane Pearl in A Mighty Heart. Mariane is Black Cuban and Dutch.
