Interesting read, most historians and anthropologist dislike "big question" type from a novice in the field and dismissed it.
But Diamond basically theorised that sub Saharan-climate, the lack of domestic animals for consumption and the role of malaria played a big part on why that area of the world was slower to develop.
Jared Diamond has been totally debunked.
shareTrade.. specifically trade routes with different cultures/people were (are) instrumental for development of new ideas of thought, religion and technology that helps build and strengthen civilizations. Usually, the more access a peoples have to them, the richer the civilization.
Trade routes, with the exception of South Africa (where malaria was less common) were almost non- existent in most of sub Saharan Africa.
Trade became a thing in SSA once it started to become colonized, yet the region is still poor today.

Trade ,ideas, cultural currents came much later in history to most of sub Saharan Africa. So it rational to assume that its city-states that support higher learning are not as developed as those in Western/Eastern civilizations that had the benefit of trade for over 1000 years. Malaria made traveling deadly to traders for most Africas history.
Historically, traveling traders are a savy intrepid profession, able to talk their way out of sticky situations, negotiate will all kinds of people; But they can't fight something they don't understand. The root cause of malaria was beond them, eventually most shunned the area, limiting it's development.
