Disney Grapples With How to Proceed on 'Black Panther' Without Chadwick Boseman

It's a difficult decision and it's one I'm glad I'm not in charge of. You're going to piss people off either way. To me, I think Disney will just sit out BP for a few years and then re cast. I wonder if Boseman told anyone close to him what he would prefer should the worst come to the worst and he couldn't fulfill the role anymore.

I also thought John David Washington would be the best person to take on the role. Just like Chadwick, John David has presence on screen.

I personally hope that there isn't a recast. At this point, Chadwick Boseman to most of the general public, IS T'Challa. Just like Robert Downey Jr. is Tony Stark, Chris Evans is Steve Rogers, and Chris Hemsworth is Thor. This isn't like when Marvel went ahead and recast Terrence Howard and Edward Norton with Don Cheadle and Mark Ruffalo as James Rhodes and Bruce Banner respectively after a single movie. Chadwick at the time of his passing, had played T'Challa on-screen, at least four times. Any actor who would step-in, would inevitably be compared to Chadwick.

It's the only choice that makes sense. If you recast T'Challa himself, it will be seen as insensitive. Perhaps for BP2 they'll stick with Shuri and then later introduce Kasper Cole.

I disagree. I think that Disney will think the odds of making back their money on a hundred-million dollar film will be better if they recast.

I mean, this is Disney, DISNEY, and if given an option between respecting story continuity and putting a black actress who isn't a big draw in the leading role of a very expensive film, or putting in a new actor and counting on the suit and the name to sell the film... whaddya think they're going to do?

Of course I know there is absolutely no hope in hell that anyone will even consider the best option, which is to have Queen Mother of Wakanda Angela Basset eat the purple flower and become a superhero. She's so freaking awesome! But it's not happening.

Rumor also has it that Shuri will be T'Challa's successor as Black Panther. This was kinda long known even before Chadwick Boseman's death. Even if Boseman haven't died, a part of me did wonder if the Shuri choice was always a bit intentional once Disney later learned about Boseman's long-term illness and didn't want to push the actor too hard for the sequel out of respect. Then that rumor might really make sense in this case and not really be about Disney getting "woke." Some people also complained about the use of CGI in some scenes, but think about it there; that might also be all done for a reason in retrospect.
