I'll be downright stunned if this get nominated for a oscar....

first I want to say, I did not love the film as much as the majority...

I liked it....I rated it a 8/10....Good but not great...

so I may be biased, But I just do not think its anywhere near good enough to get a best picture nom.

If Logan, The Dark Knight or The Avengers didnt get the Nom....I just see no way this does...

If it does, for me,It Will be a clear case of giving the nom based on its social impact....

I don't think there has ever been an awards season that they did not give out a Best Picture nomination because an entry didn't meet the arbitrary standards of a movie that did or did not win 1, 5 or even 10-20 years prior.

The competition for awards are in the year that the film is nominated. BP (2018) has nothing to do with Logan (2017) or even the Avengers (2012). But you already know that. Films from previous years can both help and hurt the chance for a film after the fact in the year that the film is nominated. The same is true for actors. My take on that is that the voters know that also.

I'm not saying that...

I was just stating I believe the highest quality of CBMs ever made were Logan, The Avengers and The Dark Knight....

I'm then stating, IMO I do not believe Black Panther is on that level of Quality....I believe BB is a clear step down from those films....

so If Those GREAT and IMO The Highest quality CBM's ever produced didnt break the mold and receive a Nom....I dont see BB doing it...

Im in no way saying "Hey Logan, didnt get one, BB cant get one either"

I'm just stating, IMO BB is not the quality Logan was, Therefor it would really surprise if BB(A Lesser quality film) got A Nom

The nomination isn't about The Highest Quality of CBM's. The Nomination would be for Best Film in the year it is nominated. The competition would be the other films nominated in that same year regardless of being CBM's or not.

reply

Look you dont have to agree with my opinion....I'm not stating it as a fact

For me personally, I'm just saying I would be shocked if BB gets a Best picture nom. when Logan,The Dark Knight and The Avengers didnt....

I'm not saying, That the voters has to vote "Hey we didnt give Logan a best picture nom.....no best picture for BB then"

I'm just saying for my personal opinion, It would be shocking to see A IMO Lower quality CBM get a best picture nom. ....

I get that every year is different....

This is purely in My Mind ONLY....I'm just saying that If BB got the Nom......for me it would be odd because I dont feel its in the same league with The Best CBMs ever....

If the voters decide BB is one of the best movies of THIS YEAR.....thats fine...

But for me, it will be weird that BB got such a high reward/nom and Others like The Avengers, Logan and TDK didnt....

I hope you understand what I'm saying....I agree, every year is different and voters shouldnt vote on anything but this year.

my comments are only what I'm would be thinking it my head....hypothetically speaking, If tomorrow I read that BB got a best picture nom.....

My first thoughts would be "wow, I cant believe It got a best picture nom. and Logan,TDK and The Avengers didnt"

I would this immediately understand, The voters werent voting against Logan, TDK and The Avengers, I would understand, It means The voters simply thought BB was just one of the 10 best pictures of 2018....

But for me, It would be Odd, That I film I consider not in the same league as Logan, The Avengers and TDK received A best picture nom and they didnt...

I'm not sure how a could be more civil about this.........

reply

Also.....

If BB were to get a Best Picture Nom.

since your right about every year being different....

I would have to look at BBs best picture Nom like this....

Since I believe Logan, TDK and The Avengers are higher quality films and IMO deserve A Nom more...

I would then have to consider 2018 A weak year....

If The voter decide BB is one of the best pictures of 2018 and give it A nom...

I will then have to conclude, 2008, 2012 and 2017....simply had a much stronger fields and therefor The Higher quality TDK, Logan and The Avengers didnt get the Nom because of tougher competition...

This would be SOLELY my opinion....I'm in no way stating it as fact...

But it would be the only way I could make sense out of Black Panther getting A Nom When IMO Much higher quality CBMs didnt....

and again, Let me be clear....I know my opinion on BB is in The minority.

based on all data from reviews, ratings and scores....The Majority actually does consider BB one of the best CBM's ever....I'm not denying that or arguing...

But My opinion is different, I consider BB to be A Middle of the pack MCU film....Good but not great....I'm in The Minority here...

So I'm not arguing that BB isnt great....I fully knowledge that is the consensus

If I can just chime in my two cents. Black Panther I actually liked quite a bit. Although I did have a few flaws with it. Mainly in the fact I do not feel the cgi in the final act is good. I do think Michael B Jordan turns in a quite solid performance as Killmonger. Here is the thing movies like The Dark Knight, and Logan were more deserving of getting a best picture nomination than Black Panther is. Black Panther's chances get boosted because of the social impact. To be honest in terms of comic book films there are four movies which I felt deserved a best picture nomination.

Superman the movie: Is it dated in aspects absolutely but people have to realize the level of ambition that went into this film. Think about it the superhero thing was a pipe dream at this point in time. Richard Donner had to convince studio big wigs to allow him to make this. He hires a bunch of veteran actors and newcomers in order to help him achieve this goal. Many visual aesthetics you have to tackle as well. Many of the aspects hold up amazingly well. Reeve's performance the John Williams score, him and Kidder's chemistry, it balances comedy and drama perfectly. The effects were Oscar worthy for the time. Many of the story blueprints are still emulated to this day. Sam Raimi's Spider-man films owe a lot to Donner's first two Superman movies.

Spider-man 2: A perfectly modernized feeling of the Donner era Superman while still feeling fun and immersive. The action was groundbreaking at the time. It even won an Oscar for visuals. The ending for this film still gives me goosebumps.

The Dark Knight: Truly transcendent. At this point we all know why this one is highly regarded. It is not just because of Ledger either the whole film is fantastic.

Logan: The perfect closure to a hero. It is not afraid to go into uncharted sad territory. It deals with death and how you cope with it. It resonates because it is willing to take risks and stick to them. There is true consequence in this film.

I cant argue with any of your 4.

although for me, Superman The Movie is not really a choice because It came out before I was born and is way before my time....I do not know the impact it had or how it was received, If It was seen as something Great and amazing....

I got to imagine it was Groundbreaking though...

as for Spider-Man 2....I did not really enjoy any of the Raimi's Spider-Man films....But I absolutely recognize Im in The Minority here....Spider-Man 2 absolutely has The stats, consensus and reviews of a Best Picture contender...Its universally regarded as A Top 5 CBM in the majorities list

I also consider The Spider-Man Doc Ock train fight among the greatest superhero/villains fights ever

Logan and The Dark Knight are no brainers for me....IMO they are the highest quality CBMs ever produced....BOTH IMO not only deserved noms, But deserved them so much I considered them SNUBBED for best picture Noms

Theres a few others that I could at least see arguments made for best Picture Noms, some I feel more strongly than other....

The Avengers
Guardians Of The Galaxy
Deadpool(IMO It could be the best anyone has ever done capturing the feel of a comic book and its character)
Iron Man
Sin City

Most of these are stretches...but there are arguments to be made...

reply

Sin City to me is a stronger contender than Deadpool. The reason being is I feel that they literally put the comic book on the screen. Sin City was not an adaption it was a translation. That is how accurate it was. Also I feel it has much stronger cinematography and technical aspects than Deadpool. It's also so immersive. I'm literally so in love with it.

The Avengers is a strong candidate. My only gripe is as far as artistic value it's not cutting edge. It's technically fine I just feel other comic book movies and blockbusters stand above it. Now with that said it was a sheer novelty that all these heroes came together and it worked well! The nice aspect of Avengers was since every character in there had an origin tale already done in a solo film prior to it you didn't have to have tons of exposition. Xmen 1 did the team up thing first but had to bog it down with explaining everything.

Guardians of the Galaxy I can see. It's honestly a miracle and I'm amazed at how good that turned out.

Iron man while I like a lot I only have a tiny flaw with. I think rdj kills it. Only nitpick is I feel it is quite derivative of Batman Begins without that movies technical panache. It is not a ripoff i just noticed a lot if copied beats. Batman Begins to me had better cinematography and I feel the supporting cast of it was a bit better. Not knocking iron man at all though a very solid film.

One I would make a light case for is xmen days of future past. I felt that one had very strong visuals and effects. I feel it has a great ending, great cast and is just barely beneath Logan. The quicksilver scene was such a feast for the eyes. Love the inspiration from Terminator 2 also. It shows that you can sometimes clean up a franchise without rebooting it.

^^^

theres a stronger case for A Oscar Nom for Best Performance for RDJ than A best picture nom....

although I do feel IM is an extremely high quality film...but Best Picture? probably pushing it

also....I cant believe Sin City never crossed my mind as The Best anyone has done capturing the feel on A comic book movie...

When I watched Deadpool....thats the first thing that stood out....I remember thinking, This may be the best anyone has ever done at capturing and literally Bringing A Comic character to life on film....

thats the reason why I consider it A Great Movie, But I cant believe I never recognized The same exact thing with Sin City....

I always loved Sin City for many different reasons, But I never actually had the thought "Dear Lord, This may Be The best anyone has ever done Bringing A comic to life or Capturing The feel of A comic book".....Until now

Your right Sin City May in fact Be ahead of Deadpool in that.....I still think Deadpool/Reynolds as Deadpool is probably the best Comic character ever translated to the screen or The best anyone has done capturing the exact feel and essence of a Comic character...

But Film Wise.....Sin City probably ranks above Deadpool in that regard....now that I truly think about it, I have no probably saying Sin City is The best anyone has done at capturing The feel of a Comic Book......

Good call

reply

See that's the thing. When everyone was like Deadpool captured the comic like no other film could. I sat quiet and was like what about Sin City? Admittedly I have loved Sin City for years. To me it's always been an overlooked gem. I feel Scott Pilgrim vs the world is another one which gets overlooked. Although I still think Sin City is better.

Iron man most definitely has a better shot at best actor. Very solid film but best picture while a case can be made is reaching just a little.

See this is a tough one When it comes to best comic book character captured as far as the actor. I feel Christopher Reeve, Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L Jackson, Mickey Rourke, JK Simmons, and Patrick Stuart feel like they are stripped right out of the comic book.

Thing is actors like Robert Downey Jr, and Hugh Jackman play their roles so damn well you don't care that they don't look like a spitting image of their comic book counterpart. Which is an achievement in and of itself.

I can't dispute your point though, they did a great job at capturing Deadpool.

Bill, it might get nominated in a technical category (sound, fx, etc.) I agree it is a super-longshot to get nominated in the main categories.

I think the imdb rating is about right for this one (7.4) Very enjoyable movie and I look forward to BP2.

^^^ ya I would be to surprised with a technical....I was only referring to A Main Nom that I would be stunned by

Now that Black Kkklansman and Bohemian Rhapsody have been released there are two much more serious films that deal with topics favored by the Academy. I think Black Panther will probably clean up on the technical awards, but those other two movies will get the major awards. Not much point in mentioning any other films for consideration.
