Something I found really weird...

Wakanda is supposed to be the most advanced civilization on Earth...

And yet they still decide who's going to be king of a monarchy by fights to the death with spears and things?

Some could argue that it's good that they've kept their traditions.
Others could argue that no matter how advanced they are, they're still primitive at the core.

reply

They are primitive at their core indeed. Not only that, they are isolationists and segregate the tribes under their own Kingdom [M'Baku states T'Challa is the first King in centuries to go meet them].

Progress vs Tradition is all over the movie.

"Guns... so primitive... let me throw a spear"

reply

That's because Wakanda has an isolationist culture.

As for those fight to the death matches, no one really has to die when that happens. If one surrenders, then, the other fighter should honor that and spare their life. Also, those fight-to-the-death matches is probably a better, less bloody option than a violent coup with an opposing army fighting the kingdom's army.

everybody has a belief system that when viewed from an outside perspective can look primitive and silly but to those inside it it is a sacred and cherished thing that it not easily parted with. As Christianos says, those death matches aren't really death matched at all but contests to make sure the strongest man becomes leader

I'm trying to go for an entertaining, informative youtube channel so, if you have the time, take a look. Hope you enjoy what you see and if you have any thoughts or criticisms, i'd love to hear them. Thanks in advance. Review right here- https://youtu.be/FwPQPeEAhjg

Interesting thoughts that are so true. Thanks.

I got the impression the duels were mostly ceremonial at this point. The law is still on the books but no one expects an actual fight. None of the tribes had any interest in fighting T’Challa and seemed surprised when M’Baku challenged. Everyone treated it as a rare sight.

Later, when Killmonger wanted to go for the throne, the elders told T’Challa not to go through with it, which implies that the whole ordeal isn’t all that binding.

Kingdoms are silly and yet some of the most advanced countries in this world are...England, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Holland etc.

One reason they are still permitted to exist is their focus on tradition's. Tradition's are exceptional difficult to get rid of and kingdoms knows it.... So perhaps this too is a reason for those Wakanda tradition's to still be in place. Kings know that once they start to stray from those ritual's, they risk change beyond their con

Something I find weird is that here in real life, WE are the most advanced civilization on earth, and yet we still have Wars, Starvation, Hatred and Racism, and people believing in 2000 year old fairy tales that they call religion, which they use to justify their hate and wars. Go figure, humans, at their core, are primitive beasts, no matter how advanced they become...

Islam is only 1400 years old

And that’s the damn truth

The funny thing is, in real life Africans cities that are more modern do not have any primitive or tribal elements. If we happen to get an urban dwelling African here on movie chat they will tell you the ''primitive cultures'' are from the rural areas.

reply

Yes, but in real life African cities are not COMPLETELY isolationist, or sitting on a mountain of the most valuable substance on the planet. Which changes things completely, so. . .yeah.

reply

Of course not. Isolationism is economic suicide. The comic and movie is based around American mythology of what they think African countries are like or could be like.

reply

. . .have you read the comic?
It's gone through a LOT of iterations. While many of the story beats are the same, your sweeping generalizations are off as much as they are accurate. One immediate problem is your use of "they," which refers to a collective you may or may not have any knowledge of.

In any case, I'll repeat: "Isolationist" has different consequences when you're dealing with a fictional country, with fictional world-building elements.

In this day and age why are women still oppressed in some Muslim countries? Some of these countries are advanced in terms of medicine and other things, yet women are still having to more or less wear a potato sack over her head. It's called TRADITION. Wakanda still lives with some traditions.

reply

For sure, but this tradition seemed to be celebrated in this film,it was never portrayed as barbaric. They kind of give it a pass because it's tradition, but they should have put a little light on how messed up it is that they still prioritize violence over wisdom.
