The biggest film influences are obviously...

Eraserhead, Rear Window, The Tenant, Fight Club, Mulholland Drive, and Enemy which happened to be released the same year. Name more films about conflicted identity and lonely life in a claustrophobic lifestyle that turn into delusions and nightmares.

Don't forget Brazil as well. Especially with the production design and the bureaucracy of the office - and it's sheer lunacy.

I recently started watching Friends and I think he was influenced by that as well. https://youtu.be/RraKa-PKFPs?t=8m10s Proof he has seen it. Chandler Bing and Simon are both data processors, and both shows frequently make jokes about how no one understands what data processors do. Possibly a stretch, but it's funny.

Also you are talking about movies with similar plots, which might be important if this wasn't based off a book.

I connected it with Eraserhead and Brazil mostly.

Having an opinion can save your life. Just ask Marvin.
