Because of Chappie, I have now discovered DIE ANTWOORD!!!!!

Yup. Just letting you all know.

ZEF STYLE!!!!!!!

So recently we watched the movie Chappie about a robot - basically "Short Circuit" meets "District 9" and of course set in South Africa. I really enjoyed hearing the far-out South African "Afrikaner" accent spoken by two colorful characters that I recently found out are in a South African "Zef" style rap group called Die Antwoord ("The Answer" in the Dutch-based Afrikaans language). I checked out some of their videos on YouTube and was completely blown away. That was some of the WEIRDEST and COMPLETELY "out there" rap videos I've ever seen and heard before! They rap primarily in accented English but switch to Afrikaans (Dutch based South African language) and Xhosa (a tribal South African language) in mid-sentence! I'm surprised I've never heard of them before because generally speaking I like me some weird music from other countries!

That's Fatty Boom Boom right? Where the South African guy is driving Lady Gaga in a car explaining stuff to her about South Africa with random hyenas and stuff and she gets lost and goes to the doctor's office? The guy is all painted red and white and the lady is painted all in black with a yellow dress? Those were some crazy drum beats made on street drums... Yes that video scarred my inner child all over again!

I also read about "Zef" style. It's apparently a bizarre countercultural mix of hip hop and lower-middle class (working class) white South African (Afrikaner) culture. Beginning in the 70's, a majority of working class South Africans (Afrikaners) drove Ford Zephyrs and they would "soup them up" sort of like folks would make lowriders in South Central L.A. or something (but instead in Jo-burg!) Since the "souped up" Zephyr was the car of choice, "Zef" was used as a label for these people. Many of them also lived in trailer parks. Die Antwoord are the most successful artists that typify the slang and style of dress of the "Zef" culture. Fascinating. You learn something new everyday.

Lol! So did I. I don't normally like rap or hip hop but I can't get enough of them for some reason.

Die Antwoort are great! I can say exactly the same!

I love beautiful lyrics with meaning as much as anyone, but it's pretty unfair to judge all music simply by its lyrics. The whole is more than a sum of its parts, and certainly more than just one part. Taking one fraction of a song's lyrics completely out of context, particularly from a heavily satirical rap commenting on the current rap scene (Lil Wayne?), is just disingenuous.

reply

ahahaha, lmao, but seriously, you are more hilarious then the quote of "lyrics" you made.

Yolandie does have some sick flows! So does Ninja! He's got that bizarre Afrikaner drawl or swag or whatever you call it. Unlike anything I've heard.

Me too!!! I saw my husband watching it and was like who is this freaky chick with a nearly white elfin looking mullet? Glad I found out because I love them now.

As for the guy complaining about lyrics, I admit I never thought I'd be into a group who sings, "I can make cash rain on your ass", but I can't help it. I love their music. The beats and their rapping is a refreshing change in my opinion.

Maybe I'm just not exposed to enough music and there are more groups like this. If so, I hope I discover them too. Nothing else has made me want to dance like this in a long time.

Hehe, my girlfriend introduced me to Die Antwoord, and because of that, I watched this movie. So it was the other way around for me. I thought the two rappers were so peculiar that I had to see more of them, outside of the rapping. I wasn't disappointed. Pretty good movie.

My name is Reek... It rhymes with sneak.

Haha. Same here. ^^
