This ... Is an awful movie

I really like it. I really like the new music and so does the original composer.

reply

I think the OP made that comment without actually seeing the movie. It may not be for everyone's tastes but only a moron would call it "an awful movie."

No i seen it, i wrote that comment as the movie finished. I thought it was an awful movie. Who are you to call me a moron?

reply

Who am I? It is called free speech. You are free to call this movie awful and I am free to call you a moron for saying that. See how that works? It goes both ways. Maybe 'nitwit' is a better term for you.

I have an MFA in musical theatre. I am also a composer, a recording artist and my IQ is high enough to allow me entrance to the "genius" society (not that I'm interested). I am no moron.

And I agree. This movie was horrendous.

reply

The movie itself was okay, but like most modern flicks (particularly remakes), it suffered from too many pop culture references.

I agree that the new music was rubbish. They used the old songs - which were always great, and did their own versions of them. That's not a problem.

But the new songs... Anybody else feel like slashing their wrists? You have vibrant, fun songs like "It's the hard-knock life", "I think I'm gonna like it here" and "You're never fully dressed without a smile" - and then you have the boring, sad sounding others that they introduced. Massive juxtaposition.

reply

My problem is that they changed Mr. Warbucks name (I was going to call him Mr. Banks for a second... because an article I just read talked about being heavy-handed with the name) and they didn't change Annie's. If they were going to completely update this and change names, then they could have in every way and it could still be considered "original" with nods towards other movies. Disney does it QUITE OFTEN.
She's about the only red-headed character and it was so iconic, the only other one I can think of is the one with pig-tails and stockings, I've forgotten her name.
I say this because it was so hard to listen to them ALL sing even Foxx, he didn't do well tempering himself to fit with the rest of the cast and because he was held back his singing was difficult to stomach. You could hear the auto-tune, even when the little girl was singing, actually I noticed it the most then and I didn't think she needed it. The songs would have sounded so much better without it but it seems that they used it because it's popular right now, I feel like it's everywhere now. What happened to letting singers sound like themselves? So they might as well have made it a straight show or created newer songs.
I thought it would have been better had it been a straight play/movie, that would have been a nice take on it. It was still cute with the modern take on things, I just hated the music this time around.

reply

My God! Somebody replied without hating me, ha ha.

Re: the auto tune - THANK YOU. The original movie didn't have auto tune. What is this obsession that Hollywood has with perfection nowadays? The original Annie sang and hit some dodgy notes. So what!! It was real, and it was good enough. The little girl sang "When you're alone" in Hook, and there was no auto tune. It was good enough. Hollywood really need to cut this extreme polishing routine out.

Cameron Diaz as Miss Hannigan was a bit of a disaster. Miss Hannigan was scary when we were kids. She was unattractive and angry. Cameron Diaz was too pretty and too juvenile.

I would have liked Jamie Foxx's name to be Warbucks too.

This movie suffered from a weak script, and a desperate attempt to make 347 pounds of cheese look cool and slick. They could not commit to the hokeyness of it all. The editing is awful. The singing and sound quality is pathetic. Jay-Z and Will Smith couldn't find sound editors to fix the muffled quality of some of this? Between the technical problems and the script, this pretty decent cast is wasted.

there are good ways to 'update' a movie and bad ways to 'update' a movie. Special effects would have been a good way. But bringing in mentions of 'George Clooney' etc were unneeded. They realized after the project was conceived that it was probably going to tank so they just decided to throw 'anything' together as fast as they could

"only a moron would call it an awful movie" is actually a moronic comment, to be honest.

reply

So my free speech ends in im a moron for thinking this movies crap and comments like i Wont have seen it? Really?

No doubt your some friendless sad child who has nothing better to do than spout hate from your keyboard.

Your post had two words, no analysis, no indication of what you might have thought worked and what exactly you think is dreadful. You don't have to like it but it takes a moron, or maybe a nitwit, to take the time to go to a "discussion" board and post two words. What, are you not smart enough to evaluate what you saw and write about it intelligently?

Or do the two words simply represent your maximum ability to express yourself?

I really liked it. As I state elsewhere, some come looking for a musical here, others a kids movie with some songs. I'd be curious to hear what your expectations were. Expectations can have a lot to do with not liking a movie. For example, an old favorite of mine is Adrenaline Drive, a silly Japanese comedy with some romance; many hated it (and gave it a trouncing on the message boards) because the title was poorly chosen and they expected an action movie, which it certainly was not.

reply

I have never agreed with a single review by A. O. Scott of the NYT's but I agree with him on this film. I don't care that it's a remake, and I thought some of the acting and scenes were good but I think the problem, for me, with this film is: why is it a musical? I think it would have been better if it wasn't.

Oh, and I never believed Cameron Diaz as a mean person. It seemed stale and as if she was being a caricature of the character rather than being the character herself.

copy that

The singing was certainly awful, but the rest was mildly amusing, the characters and dialogue was funny at times.

reply

The singing was dreadful? That is an extreme exaggeration. Dreadful is John Travolta singing Summer Loving in Grease.

reply

That's part of Grease's charm. He had super cool hair and looked like an idiot when he danced.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. I just watched Annie with my kid. I thought it was going to be terrible, but found it pretty cute. Jamie Foxx wasn't the greatest though. The style fits in with most kid's movies. The cheese was appropriate for 5-14 year olds. Perhaps my low expectations allowed me to enjoy the whimsy. :)

My kids love it. They are 6 and 8, its perfect for their age range IMO. It has humor, a balance of good/bad characters, etc.
