a perfect ending??? CAUTION.. SPOILERS!

Overall, I thought this was very compelling and well acted. The aspect of this film that bothers me is the very minimal way the film actually portrays the illness. I know the film was not about "that", but as a plot element, it felt a little bit like something you see in soap operas where they drop some big, dramatic bombshell, without integrating it properly. Perhaps this only bothers me. Considering the ultimate impact of the illness, I felt the director sugarcoated that major chapter of the person's life. Thoughts?

I don't think it was dropped at all - the doctor character talking about cancer was introduced very early on. And then he appeared again at least twice more. It seemed integrated to me, because the whole movie, I was asking myself, who has the cancer, and what will its repercussions be? It was also hinted that Rebecca was the one with the cancer, thus her becoming so emotional, and so in need in her last days of passion, something she'd never had her whole life. And keeping pain hidden from others, which was what Rebecca wanted to do, does not equal sugar coating.
