This is a great documentary -- How is it only a 5 rating?

Whether you liked or hated Downey, this is a great documentary. No way this should be a 5 rating.

It almost perfectly describes Downey's meteoric rise and fall, describes his roots and his familial conflicts, puts him in context with the people of his time, interviews a great many people, shows archival footage, utilizes some hilarious animation effects to move the story along.

This is a great, well-balanced documentary of a very flawed but significant individual.

How is it at *5* ???

I didn't like Downey's style, but the documentary was highly interesting. One thing I wished they would've added in was his Wrestlemania V appearance (I am guessing the filmmakers couldn't afford the WWE fee or the WWE would not lease out the footage). Someone said in the doc that the skinheads hoax was his jump the shark moment, but I think the Wrestlemania V appearance was the beginning. It damaged his creditability as legitimate. After all, he did a nightly sideshow and was participating in another sideshow, so who could tell the difference? lol

I only watched the show two or three times. I lived in Austin at the time and no station wanted to touch it, so I had to tune it in from San Antonio or watch it at my cousin's house near Oklahoma City, and it was shown late in those markets. I remember one of the episodes I watched where he had a great insult: "Hey, would you shut up for a second? Your mouth is bigger than your gums." LOL

I thought it was a good doc, but the filmmakers kinda showed their dislike for Downey through ominous music, particular interviews, and slapping together pieces of new conservative media types, comparing them to Downey (when in reality, Morton was more of a shock guy than a conservative), and putting DADDY and MOMMY on the screen showing his famous (or semi famous) parents... I don't know... I just got a feeling some of his was a little... bias at times...

but still good... and yeah, a 5 rating, that is a surprise... should be higher...

I loved it and gave it a 10!!

The doc's a great film: hot subject, brilliant film technique, great editing, awesome animation, fast-paced, informative, captures the man, the moment and his enduring (love it or hate it) legacy. What more could you ask? The flic's entertaining as hell!

Something mythic here, too: A man cowed by the towering shadow of his father, whose pitch-perfect voice and winning personality brought him fame and access to the powerful. How could Downey Jr. compete?

Like Shakespeare's Richard III, rudely stamped, sent "unfinished" into the world, he chose the role of villain, provocateur, gutter-mouthed bad boy, hero of the disenfranchised. Like Brando in "The Wild One," when asked what he was rebelling against, he blew smoke in the questioner's face and sneered, "Whatta ya got?"

Does not have a wide enough release. What really surprised me about this documentary is how it neither vilified the man or made him a hero, but instead made him out to be a tragic figure.

Agreed, it is is way more ambiguous (in its conclusion) and objective in its handling of most of the content than most documentaries, let alone those of a controversial human subject!

There's a short review here that pretty well sums it up -- http://wsnhighlighter.com/2013/06/07/evocateur-the-morton-downey-jr-mo vie-explores-lunacy-of-80s-talk-show/

Agreed. It's a fascinating portrait of a deeply bitter, tortured, and self-destructive man whose insatiable desire for acceptance lead him down a sad and tragic path towards his own grim untimely end. My only real complaints are that this documentary totally ignores Mort's gay brother who had AIDS and his career as an actor after his talk show fizzled.
