We used to watch this early trash tv and just howl with laughter at his antics.
One thing I seem to remember is that he never really took it too seriously. We was like the original troll. His show was a train wreck, but entertaining in a mind numbing sort of way.

You are right...he generally seemed to be enjoying himself. I was roughly the same age as the "fans" in the movie at the time. Being outside of NY, I didn't get the show until the last year or so. I never missed a minute for the first month or two, but after that I gradually stopped watching altogether. As you see in the move, the "legit" guests pretty much dried up, so it got to be mostly side show acts down the stretch.
