Necessary to watch Season 1 before Season 2?

Some of my favorite actors are in season 2, so I want to give this show a try.... but should I watch Season 1 first so I know everything that's going on?

I loved the first season. It was uplifting. All the storylines connected beautifully. Sadly it lost its way in the second season. Too bad.

Season one is worth watching. They changed the format/story line in S2 and ruined it.
