Sweetheart

i literally felt weird inside every time martin called jake 'sweetheart'

i get the father and son bond etc, but calling a young lad sweetheart just sounded bizarre and kinda creepy.

jake/son/buddy/numbers kid.......all better.

I call my son "sweetheart" occasionally. I also call him "buddy", "little man", "tiger", "goober" and "monster" (in an affectionate way). He responds to all of them, and there's nothing icky about any of them.

Oh my god, I know, I did too for reasons I can't even explain; it just felt so....weird. And I have to say, it gets said quite a lot throughout the and it is never something I got used to. I know it's kind of hard when you're trying to speak in an affectionate way to a male child because you do sort of run out of pet names but my goodness, buddy, champ, sport, etc...anything else would've been better than sweetheart.

That's brainwashed stereotyping. I have never seen sweetheart as a feminine word anyway and I've used it myself for little tots whether boys or girls. I see many people use this word as it isn't meant to indicate just females

reply

Absolutely agree. Do these people also find it weird to hug and kiss their sons? To tell them they love them or that they are proud of them? Weirdos.

reply

Lol. "Numbers kid" would have been good!

I know this is an old topic but how is that odd? Some parents call their kids things like sweetheart and sweetie.

reply

Hearing Martin call Jake sweetheart felt fairly natural to me, as a fan of 24 I remember Jack Bauer calling his daughter sweetheart as well. Something about after she's shot someone telling her something along the lines of: Take a deep breath sweetheart...now shoot him again.
