Very similar to Ralph Bakshi animation and Terry Gilliam themes

I can't believe that Ralph had nothing to do with the animation! It almost instantly reminded me of Cool World.

On the other hand, there are so many themes here that tie into Terry Gilliam's work (especially Brazil) such as the cynical and satirical future, industry that sees workers as unnecessary evil, flexible boundaries between the real and the imagined, (un)real love as the only comfort, the ambiguous ending and so on.

If you like this movie and have never heard of the aforementioned two names, you'll want to get introduced with their work.

Yeah same here. Maybe a little Gilliam, but definitely Bakshi for sure. I suppose one could argue both Bakshi's work and this film draw from the same era, but they do seem to exaggerate and distort it in similar ways. Am a huge Bakshi fan, but The Congress is much more developed and refined than Bakshi's work- which is obviously smaller more independent. For me, at the end of the day, the larger and slicker production quality work extremely well for the epic scope of The Congress, but yeah it's unmistakably Bakshiesque..
