I'm gobsmacked

Just saw The Congress for the first time. How did I not know about this movie and why didn't it win a ga-zillion awards? Where can I begin?

Concept: very high concept, very original way of conveying the message that science over love only brings doom.

Satire: the ability to poke fun at the phoniness of Hollywood and at the roles of everyone in that business, producer, agent, actor.

Dialogue; bordering on brilliant all the way through. I was especially enthralled at the scene where Harvey Keitel the agent speaks to Robin the actor about his need for her to be weak so he could exploit her and the moment she had children and no longer was weak, he felt abandoned. The raw honesty in this film ... well, I'm gobsmacked.

Artistry; this film pulled me in from the start and did not let go of me. I could not take my eyes from it. Each scene was so amazing. The storyline was like this psychedelic trip reminiscent of Tommy (musical) that tore at my heart with its tragedy, its beauty and its ultimate message of a mother's love for her children trumping all the insanity.

Man, if this isn't the crowning achievement of Wright's career, I don't know what is. I knew she was gold the moment I saw her in Moll Flanders. She isn't just a good actress. This is a woman of substance who has chosen her roles carefully. The irony in this film, she sells out. She hasn't sold out in real life. LOVE her!

And now I will make it my business to learn everything I can about this book, this author, the film's director and how this project came to be, how Wright was attached, etc.

I agree with the high concept remark. I am sure though this film didn't win awards because it was nothing more than convoluted nonsense.

Who took my toast?

All the things you say are more or less true, yet for me it kind of ultimately fell apart, like sand running through your fingers.
