All they had to do was redub certain lines that originally had the language in question. Many times when the movie gets an R merely for language (and nothing else), you can easily bring it down to PG-13 by redubbing lines.

Good point; I'm sure they lost tens, perhaps hundreds, of millions by keeping the R Rating. I mean, imagine all the excited 15 year olds who would have flocked to see this in droves!
