R-rating is gonna sink this movie.

Who is the audience? Anyone?

That's what I was thinking. I suspect it's a very soft R that the filmmakers thought they could get a PG13 for. If you look at the rating description "For sexual content and brief drug use" this suggests my point. If they knew it was going to get an R they would have surely inserted some language into it and I notice the rating description says "sex" but not "nudity." Probably the MPAA being overly prude as usual. I reckon this will get a 12A in the UK, normally equivalent to a PG13.

reply

Only "some sexual content" which suggests sex is fairly limited.

reply

it's only R for Dialogue and sexual themes, theres only one F-bomb and theres barely anything else, some dialogue may be questionable but its a very very soft R

reply

Yeah, that makes it weirder. With slight edits, it could've been a hard PG13, and more families would go to this.

Maybe a National Lampoon movie was the last R-rated movie about a comedic family? "Liitle Miss Sunshine"? But that movie was real good.

i just saw a screening of it with the director present and he was asked why he didnt appeal and simply put, the budget is too low for them to pay for the appeal process, and they edited it down as much as possible and they still got R,

apparently the shot that had the most issue was a close up of an xtc pill, but the shot was needed for story reason so it couldnt be cut.

reply

I can't believe that this was rated R. To me it was a soft PG-13.

Really sad that this movie which had a lot of heart and dealt with the dysfunction of modern family dynamic will be missed by those that would enjoy it the most.

Yet another reason the there needs to be a modernization of th MPAA.

reply

I don't understand why it was Rated R to be honest.

You can't kill damnation, Mister. It don't die like a man dies.

reply

It's rated R because man was smoking pot which is really silly reason to rate this R! That's the same reason why It's Complicated is rated R.
