She has to be that way with him. He is as arrogant as they come. So he needs her to push him or he would do nothing but be the arrogant person he seems to like being. By the way I am one who loves that smirk she has.

reply

Yes! It's totally annoying!

reply

If you use a word like 'hate' to describe how you feel about someones stupid smile, what word do you use when you actually hate something?

reply

I think that's not just Anna's character, it's the actress. I like Jennifer but the only other movie I've seen her in was A&E Pride and Prejudice mini series and she had that same smile all the time. I really think it's just her.

reply

She had it the entire time in Contagion also, watch her as she drives to her sick dad in the film, she has this pursed lip smile which kind of bugs me.

reply

Who cares, let the person express themself fine hate her smile, I think it is idiotic and stupid.
She acts like she is all knowing, and full of wisdom. Fact is that it is a sin to talk to the dead. You cant talk to them you actually are conversing with demons that impersonate them.
Sad people believe that loved ones hang around and talkto them, think they are so spiritually gifted to talk to them. Anyone can talk to a demon, only stupid people do. It is not a gift it is sinful stupidity and dont accuse me of being religious I am not, religion is mostly satanic. Big wake up call.
Just wake up dont take my word for it, but this program is just trying to decieve people and lead them into opening doorways for demons to have access.
Dont be stupid, practice music, paint, dance, live dont talk to the dead, they are in another place and all you are talking to are demons impersonating them.

reply

If not religious, then I'm thinking completely nuts.

reply

Michelle, darling: Are you completely demented? (Or you are just a troll? I vote for troll; nobody can be so delusional and still not being committed.)
So you are NOT religious but you say it is a SIN to talk to the dead? Wow.
And how do you know that when you do that you are actually "conversing with demons"? The demons explained that to you?
If by any chance you really believe anything of this gobbledygook you wrote please seek medical help; there are drugs that could bring you back to reality.

reply

michelle-halloway,

I hope you have found a way to enjoy life a bit more by now. As I'm sure you have figured out, you can't possibly know who and/or why anyone talks to someone they claim is dead.

If you were being a troll, I hope you had your fun. If you were serious, I hope you found the help you so desperately needed when you wrote that post. Either way, I hope life is better for you.

May your spirits have been lifted over time.

Not just her smile. Her body language. Her pattern of speech. Almost everything about her I find very annoying. It is very very rare that a performer annoys me just by being ho they are. The only other one I can think of is Jane Adams, aka Tanya, on Hung. She is infuriating to watch her constant disheveled, spooked, awkward personality. Like a real life version of Tweek from South Park. And like this actress, I think it just the way she is. They both completely ruin the shows for me.

There's nothing to hate about Anna, and if you do, you're wasting your emotional energy. I suspect that you and the guy who posted this silly remark are uncomfortable in your own skins. You don't like the way your lives are going, therefore you hate people who like themselves and seem happy (it's called envy). The character of Anna is that fictional rarity: a happy ghost. She's not sorry about most of the things she did in life because she did very little worth regretting, and she's not sorry for helping people. She was actively, positively engaged with people right up to the moment she died. She's only sorry she died before she could finish her work. And now she's getting Michael to help finish it, so why shouldn't she smile? You're the opposite -- cynical, unconcerned (no, don't confuse that with being either hip or a realist: it's neither). Now I'm not fond of true believers, and Anna strikes me like she might have been a Pollyanna at one point in her life, but I'm not a cynic, either: cynics are just embittered former romantics who got burned and couldn't cope, so they damn everything, and everything pleasant rubs them the wrong way. Sound familiar? Really, your comment says almost nothing about the character nor why she should bother anyone rational but loads about you. So maybe you should both save your caustic venting for each other and spare the rest of us here on the list, yes?

reply

There is nothing wrong with the character. Just the actress who plays her. Her smile is annoying. As are many things about her in my opinion. It is YOU who is wasting their emotion energy caustically defending a fictional character on a marginal television program. And I am far from unconcerned. It concerns me quit a bit that people like you take their social and political cues from ridiculous shows like this. If you are so concerned, may I suggest you use that box in front of you to educate yourself about what is really happening in the world, then turn of your tv, and go do something about it. But you won't. You are just concerned enough to be placated by a happy do-gooder ghost on the television.

I respect your opinions.

I don't mind the actress nor her acting. I like her and think that her character is what separates this from other shows and wish they would focus more on their relationship and perhaps continue have her to help move him to a better balance between her people skills and his technical skills. Also unlike the audience and the people around her, when she appears she has no idea on what is happening so her demeanor may often seem out of place.

Dr. Holt is surrounded by people who care and care about him. It may be too soon for him to be shown realizing this. Perhaps one problem is that the show has too may interesting characters with not enough time to justice to their stories.

reply

Totally agree. The smug blissful smile she had when Holt had just lost his friend was really grating.

They really need to tone her down. I thought ep. 4 was really good because he finally told her superior self-righteous arse off.

She is/was by no means perfect, and because of her actions the clinic is sinking. So now he has to abandon his life to fix her mistakes. And all the while he still has to deal with her disruptive condescending presence randomly popping up.

reply

The show is very much like Providence -- w/ Melina Kanakaredes -- playing a doctor. where the spirit of her mother comes back in every episode to guide her.

It was successful -- but, what's up with all these spirits? jmho, and useless, at that.

reply

Thank God I am not alone... I can't stand that woman, don't understand why she is so popular. If an actor has the same stupid smile in every single role she/he plays, that's something wrong with the 'talent' thing, don't you agree?
I mean, I didn’t recognize Kevin Spacey in ‘Outbreak” and Sean Penn in ‘Carlito’s Way’. I love these two actors, they are great. No stupid smiles frozen in their faces.

Good girls go to heaven BAD GIRLS GO EVERYWHERE!!

reply

Oh boy - that really sums it up for me. Thanks DeathOfNames - you summed up why this show irritated me so much. I might be tempted to watch ep 4 just to see the dressing down!

reply

Completely agree, I wish they would ask her to not do it.

You'll learn to hate me/But still call me baby/OhLove/So call me by my name

reply

I like Ana. I have no problem with her.

reply

Ditto. You don't like it? Change the channel: there are plenty of other things to watch.

reply

I agree. They might want to do away with her at the end of the season. I think it would be even better show without her. Maybe have another dead person visit him next season.

reply

I do too. It just bugs me. Meryl Streep has sort of the same explession--like she just smelled something unpleasant. I don't find either of them very attractive because of that expression that they display so often.

reply

i just caught the last few minutes of the January 6th Gifted Man episode, while i was waiting for CSI: NY to start...

so, i came to the Board for the first time in a long time, and this is the first thread i saw...
that's amazing!, inasmuch as i was interested in knowing what people had to say about the actress' constant (IMO) idiotic smile...

sadly, that's one of the reasons i stopped watching this show despite the fact that i absolutely love Margo Martindale...
i just can't watch that woman, Anna, and her doofus grin every time she's on the screen...

i wonder if anyone has ever told Jennifer Ehle to watch herself, and see what she thinks of her own smile?
do you think she might try to stop - or tone it down?

it really is off-putting...

Measure twice, Cut once...

reply

Well, she's one of the two main reasons why I stopped watching this show after two episodes...

reply

She could have suffered from Bell's Palsy giving her a croocked smile. Either way I find her crooked smile quite endearing and she is also a very talented actress.

reply

I also like her smile and her acting, she does remind me of Meryl Streep also but with red hair, more so than even Meryls daughter who was on episode 6 and did a fine job. I enjoy A Gifted Man as a show and all of the actors.
