Oh dear!

You have to be joking...Eddie Izard as Long John Silver, what in a dress with lipstick, l don't think so, there is only one Long John Silver and that was Robert Newton, there have been several portrayals including Orson Wells, Charlton Heston, and Jack Palance but l`m afraid non came anywhere near Newtons John Silver, the fact that there are some other first class actors in this version might just save it, but Eddie Izzard come on give me a break

I think this is a worthy opponent for any story to be told of the high seas and conspiracy - if anything, the over made up Elija Woods was more distubing than anything Eddie Izzard dons!

I have never been a fan of this story, but I watched and enjoyed this made for TV movie.

But, we are all entitled to our opinions this is mine and your is yours. Both are different, but both justified for our own views and I respect that.

He's actually really great in this.

Really? prejudice over a comedian and actor (yes chronologically in that order) who has taken varied character roles in successful films that he has added too in quality? I must have missed his dresses and skirts in the charity marathons too...

Fair enough the level has been set very high by previous actors, the same can be said for many a film...Whats wrong with bringing a new interpretation of a story to people? Russell Brand is by no means the definitive Arthur, but he played an interesting interpretation.

bah humbug. old is better

reply

Haven't watched this yet, but Eddie Izzard is a creditable actor..... don't let yourself become preoccupied by skirts and dresses :)

I just watched this and Eddie Izzard was awesome. Try watching something before you judge!!

You are entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine: you are a moron!

Eddie Izzard just gets better and better! His best recent performance, IMO, is Lost Christmas. Loved it and him! He was also good in Treasure Island. So what if as a comedian he sometimes wears women's clothes/makeup. This has nothing to do with his work as an actor. If you can't handle a little transvestism (OP), the world must be a very scary place for you!

I will watch anything Eddie's in and judge the show and his performance on their own merits. Not what he wears in a whole other area of his career!

First, never judge something before you've seen it, especially based on such ridiculous premises as not realizing that Izzard is a talented actor as well as a comedian. Second, while Newton is a very memorable Long John Silver, the one that comes closest to the Silver of Robert Louis Stevenson's description is Charlton Heston. Silver was never meant to be a "ham" but someone who could easily pass as respectable.

Eddie Izzard was great, and has always been a fine actor. This isn't about who can best Robert Newton's over-the-top Silver... why would you want to, anyway? Izzard is far more believable than Newton's great but far too exaggerated performance. Apples and oranges.

First time i ever saw Izzard in my life. I didn't even know this man existed. He did a fine job in this movie. Appart from Frodo al actors were fairly ok. Also, it was a nce TV flick too. 7/10 i think. Hey, it's better than any SciFi crap nowadays.

Eddie Izzard is great at everything he does. I've met him personally, and he's an extremely intelligent not to mention, funny guy even 'off' stage.

And FYI, he dropped the dresses and lipstick in his comedy routine years ago.
