Fed up with the adverts every 10 mins!

I love the story of Treasure Island and hoped my 11 year old son would share my enthusiasm. Unfortunately the frequent ad breaks caused us both to lose interest half way through. Don't think I have the patience to sit through part 2 tomorrow.

reply

Makes me feel better that I will be watching it commercial free and at my leaisure...All parts, too ;)

reply

DVDs are a godsend! But of course I'll only buy it if it's any good. :D

reply

Sky+ and skip through the breaks. Even better, wait until the next day when Sky put it ad free on Anytime.

reply

yeah it was better than I was expecting, shame about the adverts.
It did seem more aimed at the adult audience though and maybe not the best choice for children.
On that point you might do better with disney's Treasure Planet, its a faily decent movie, a much simpler telling of the story but the relationship between long-john and jim is done very well.

Unless it's for very young children that can't handle any sort of menace, get the Christian Bale/Charlton Heston version from 1990. It's a great adaptation of the book (more faithful than any other version) with a wonderful cast and some excellent action sequences.

reply

yea, either get sky plus or be a pirate. which in this case is very appropriate. arrrr

reply

I saw Treasure Island when I was eight and it was perfect then. Goodness knows how many times I've seen it since but I would have been willing to have my leg cut off so I could be Long John! This new version is flash and modern but I won't be watching this ever again. I've been spoilt by my heroes of the 1950 version. The modern writers have used the title, the main character names, the name of the ship but mucked about with the story and I think it would have been more honest of them to re-title it altogether. Why do they try and trick people who know the film and the story into thinking its going to be familiar? Mr Robert Newton sir, you have nothing to fear from this offering.

reply

While I don't share your enthusiasm for the 1950 movie, I respect it and I do share your love for the book. I think I was 7 or 8 the first time I read the book and have probably read it a dozen times since. The 1990 Bale/Heston movie totally captured it, IMO, but that aside Mr. Stevenson wrote a timeless classic adventure story and like so much modern, this movie just pizzed all over it.

No, Mr. Newton has nothing to worry about with this.

Avast ye scurvy dog, you should have waited until it was flowing around the internet and downloaded that bad boy.

reply

This scurvy dog taped it on VHS tape and fast forwarded thru the ads. It took less than 3 hrs to watch the (4 hr mini series) and really wasn't that bad.
When there is nothing on TV anything will dooooooooooooooooooo.........

reply

get one of those damn tv record to usb flash or portable dvd thingies... record whole day or just selected shows and watch any time u want later... it automatically ignores ads or you can just fast forward through them... easy.
