I think its massively stupid. But some people rate movies on IMDb only as a '1' or a '10'...'1' if they didn't enjoy it and '10' if they thought it was good.It doesnt matter to them if a movie they're voting for was just OK. They'll mark it as a '1' instead of giving it say a 5 or 6....A massive percentage of people vote on movies this way on IMDb, silly as it is because it really does mess with the final score movies get..When One group of people are voting properly (giving a score they think the movie deserves) and another group do it the stupid way (either give it a 1 or a 10) it creates confliction.....
If voters were supposed to just vote 1 or 10 we wouldn't bloody well have numbers 2-9 would we???

we all have our own internal system of how exactly we associate a score with a certain meaning, for example: my 7 might be 'good', 8 'very good', 9 'exceptional', while someone else attributes the scores in a completely different manner. so the average score will never correspond to what you think the movie deserves. anyway, once you have enough of voters, these changes don't really matter as you can compare 2 movies on imdb and have a sense of how they present against each other. but i agree with the basic point.

Who really cares a'way .Because IMDb ratings as wellas the ones on R.T are just a load of cr*p.I know a good few people who will come to this site B4 seeing a film and not watch it just because its got a low score on IMDb.That's why I try my hardest not to look at the rating for a movie before watching.Because when even trying to ignore it.A low score 'does' put me off.

I think the reviews on Metacritic are a good source. Much better that Rotten Tomatoes, and loads stronger than the random people who rate things on IMDb.

The only thing that drives me nuts are the jerks who will change their vote depending on the average they feel the movie deserves.

So let's say the movie was OK and had a few strong points. A person who just watched it wants to give it a 6, but checks the average and it's at 7.7 WOW! Now that person wants to vote it as 1 because they disagree with the 7.7 average. This is the type of thing I hate.

However, I do admittedly avoid voting on movies that I liked because the average is a few points higher than I'd give it. If I see a good movie then I want to give it a 7, but I already see it's 8.5 or whatever. Now I don't want to mess up the movie's good rating. I liked it, I just don't think it was at the same caliber as say North by Northwest or Blade Runner. I have high standards and a 7 is very strong in my opinion.

i have rated over 3400 titles. IMDB allows me to download the whole history in easy to use excel format. so i ran some statistics. on average, my vote is around 0.5 higher than IMDBs rating. So id say thats pretty damn close to my movie taste. of course individual movies vary greatly sometimes.

As far as IMDB rating system is flawed, it is still the best system we got to gauge public opinion.

Well, I certainly don't think it deserved a 1, but I'd consider two major flaws with the film the heavy, heavy reliance on voiceover narration, which I'm rarely big on, and the pretty bad sound mix.

Ironic, isn't it then, that it got a Genie Award for sound and one for sound editing? ;)

I wonder why you think that such morons would have anything interesting or revealing to say. So many people on IMDB are just plain stupid. Check out the way they use the language, check out the logic. Get depressed. Oh well.

Why would you be surprised that many Americans wouldn't like this movie. The fact that it was in a foreign language is one strike against it, the fact that there are children killing their parents is another strike, and the fact that a 13 year old is raped is another strike. It was a powerful and moving piece, but it's not exactly a Friday night popcorn flick.

So you are really surprised that the Transformer, Katherine Heigel loving American crowd would give this movie negative reviews? Or are you just trolling?
